Contest Stage to Hollywood
When Bobby Ashhurst first competed at the '07 Model America, you knew there was something special about the guy.  He only placed 27th out of 52 competitors, so the judges weren't convinced.  But, with each subsequent competition including a jab at Musclemania Universe, you knew Bobby was ready to be discovered.  He's college educated, a successful athlete and real estate broker.  This month, Bobby took heed of his family and friends encouragement and left the comfort of home and job for a two week chance in Hollywood.  The adventure is best described in his own words.

“Be ready when opportunity comes…Luck is
the time when preparation and opportunity meet.” – Roy D. Chapin Jr.

When I competed in my first competition, at the end of 2007, my only goal was simply to get back in shape.  I had been urged for years to compete by several friends and finally their constant encouragement convinced me to walk on a stage in almost no clothing and be critiqued by a panel of judges.  I expected to meet self absorbed pretty boys and Barbie dolls backstage but instead met people just like me who made their health and fitness a priority and looking to inspire others to do the same.  Many arestill very good friends to this day. I had such a great time that I made a point of doing more competitions just to be able to spend time with my new found friends.

Over the next couple years, I have had a few people repeatedly tell me that I can do more than just compete.  I was told not to settle on just modeling and that I should also pursue TV.  Now you have to understand that I’m a corporate real estate guy who never even imagined competing let alone acting or modeling.  To be honest, the idea of doing either is sort of scary but if there is one thing I know about myself, it’s that whenever I’m scared to do something I tend to aggressively do it anyway in order to get over that fear.

Recently I decided to take their advice and go for it.  About 2 weeks ago I went to LA with a friend, Bill Bastian, who also decided this is the path he wanted to follow.  I had no real expectations but wanted to at least make sure my trip was a productive one so I called friends and mentors and asked who they felt I should meet and shoot with.  By the time I left AZ I had a couple meetings and photo shoots booked.  I figured at the very worst I’ll have gained some new knowledge/direction from my meetings and had my photos done for the magazine submissions I’ve been asked to do.

A funny thing happened along the way.  Bill took me down to a casting agency.  I was just one in a crowd of about 200 people in there registering.  When it was my turn to take my headshot he kept joking around that I should take my shirt off.  I don’t really like taking my shirt off in public because it seems a little like showing off but the girl taking the pictures looked at me and said, “I think you should take your shirt off.”  She said it in a way that didn’t seem like she was asking but rather insisting so off went the shirt.

I began to leave and a guy came running up and asked, “Do you want to be on 90210?”  I thought Bill was playing a joke on me since he did 90210 a month earlier.  It certainly wasn’t a joke and that guy wound up being a casting director.  He asked us to come to the back to give me the details of the job.  While we were back there another casting director saw me on the monitor and asked if I wanted to be on The Ellen Show.  I was completely caught off guard with the last several minutes of my life and just knew that at this moment the only answer that should come out of my mouth is yes.

Over the next couple days, one call after another came in to work on TV shows and I made the final call backs for the AbCoaster infomercial.  I wound up having to cancel my photo shoots and turn down a few shows.  Being on set was such a great opportunity to learn and meet new people.  More importantly than that, it let me know that I really can do this!

So people have been asking me what I did.  All that I did that a lot of people don’t is rather than talking about doing it, I took a chance and put myself in a situation to do it.  Also, I made sure I was prepared to take advantage of the opportunity by being in shape at all times.  They aren’t looking at us to play the average person because we as fitness competitors are far from average.  They want us, at least initially, for our physical conditioning.  We need to see ourselves as professional athletes.  We may not play in the NFL, NBA/WNBA or MLB but we can get paid to do what we all love to do…live an active and healthy lifestyle.

I don’t know what anyone reading this has planned for their future but if pursuing fitness  beyond competing I would like to share several pieces of advice I have been told frequently by many people in the fitness/entertainment industry.  Number one:  There is no off season.  Always stay in shape because you never know when your chance is going to come.  Number two:  Be you!  Don’t be fake.  Eventually the real you will come out anyway.  Number three:  Treat yourself like a business.  You are the product you are trying to sell so make sure you make that the best product you can possibly be.  Number four:  Network and then network some more!  Whether you are at a competition, doing a photo shoot or on set filming, make some new contacts.  Number five:  Don’t wait for things to fall in your lap.  Go out and seize your own opportunities.

I know that there are some people who are going to say that it’s easier for me because I’m already here and they aren’t.  Well I don’t live in LA either.  I commute between 3 states (AZ, NV and CA) in order to do everything I need to do.  My job is in Las Vegas, I am enrolled in school in AZ and I will be in LA whenever I can to work and network as much as I can.  Now I don’t know where this road is going to lead but I’m going along for the ride and finding out.  There are going to be many people discouraging anyone trying to make it so I’m going to leave you with a thought that I took out of a conversation Bill and I had on one of our long road trips to LA.  People will call you crazy for chasing your dream but will call you courageous when you succeed.  Be courageous!

Safe in Haiti

In the devastation of the recent Haitian earthquake, we thought of our friend and Musclemania star, Mackenzi Philippeaux who won the '07 MM New York MW Class.  The 34 year old Caribbean star lives and trains in Port au Prince and was in the gym at the time of the January 12 earthquake.  We immediately tried to contact Mackenzi, but were unable to speak with him for two days.  He informed us that he and his family were all unharmed but that most of their community was destroyed.  Emotionally, Mackenzi explained, "We are all fine.  Our home is O.K..  All so lucky.  But my gym is gone.  I don't care about it - now I must help everyone here.  It is so bad!"  The 5'5", 175 lbs. bodybuilder is a 3x Haitian Champion and has been a driving force for natural bodybuilding throughout the Caribbean.  Mackenzi travels to the US frequently to learn more about training and nutrition and truly has developed an amazing physique.  Last year, he was a MM Universe MW Top 5 Finalist and had planned on competing again in June.  We wish him, his family and the Haitian people as fast a recovery as possible.  And, we hope to see Mackenzi again, soon.  For those who wish to contribute to the Haitian rescue and recovery efforts, please visit the list of relief agencies.

Worldwide Muscle
For years, the Fitness Universe Tour have been broadcast on ESPN International and other foreign language sports networks.  So, it was only natural that the recent Musclemania America Championships was Webcast Live from Las Vegas.  All 25 hours of competition were available to fitness, model and natural bodybuilding fans worldwide.  The multi-camera, network quality broadcast was seen by over 20,000 fans in the North America, Latin America and as far away as China, India, Kenya, Tibet, Egypt, Israel, Germany, Norway and 138 other countries!  Hosted live by Fitness America Pageant Champion Lindsay Messina and Model Texas Finalist Aaron Zamprano, the webcast audience was able
to follow the action as if they were in Las Vegas.  The 2010 Musclemania World Tour will feature over 10 live worldwide webcasts including the Atlantic show (Mohegan Sun in Connecticut), the Tournament of Champions (Washington D.C.), the Universe (Miami) and the New York (New York City), Texas (Ft. Worth), California (Hermosa Beach), Southwest (Phoenix), New Mexico (Albuquerque) and other regional shows.

Monster Mash

An amazing line-up of Musclemania natural superstars strutted into Las Vegas at the MM World.  But with MM legends like Morris Mendez, Ulisses Jr. and others taking a leave from competition, a fresh, new line-up of stars crashed the show and stoled the stage.

One of the favorites was Rob Terry, a massive and symmetrical 6'4", 275, professional wrestler who towered over the MM Pro line-up  The Welsh powerhouse has been bodybuilding since he was 13 and won the British Championships at just 16 years old.  But even with his amazing stature, Rob was knocked down a few notches (8th Place) by an amazing new MM Pro World Champion Dickens Lambert who had won all of the natural Canadian competitions before qualifying at the MM New York and then straight to the MM Pro World.  The 5'8", 190 lbs. high school teacher delivered a complete package of lean, full muscle with great condition, elegant symmetry and classic posing.

Also making his MM Pro debut was Marine Corps. Sgt. Donald Mitchan who just started competing 18 months ago.  He qualified by winning the MM Universe six months earlier and got to work to take on the Pros.  "I stated training for Las Vegas the day after the Miami show," Donald said.  "My contest prep was great!  I was in the same good condition that I was in Miami but with 12 more pounds of muscle."  The added size with the same muscle quality was enough to capture Second Place beating some established MM Pros.

Following his MM Pro Universe victory in Miami, Florida star David Lovelace has really improved his symmetry and size over the past year.  Since his first show at the 2003 MM Atlantic, David has been a fan favorite and really charges up an audience.  At 5'10", 200 lbs., he took Third Place and was his biggest ever in Las Vegas.

Probably one of the biggest pre-show hypes came from Antwaun Smith's camp.  Flying high following his win at the MM Universe HW & Overall, you could see the disappointment in his face when he was announced in Fourth Place.  The Las Vegas electrician has amazing symmetry but his conditioning was off when compared to Lambert, Mitchan and Lovelace.  Under the tutelage of his uncle, former IFBB Pro Kevin Levrone, Antwaun had the benefit of years of top tier competitive experience.  Plus, half of his 90 second posing routine was wasted walking up the aisle through the audience as if he was a boxer entering the ring, velvet robe, hootie and all.  It did not impress the judges and resulted in one of the lowest posing scores among the MM Pros.

Taking Fifth Place was William Simpson, a popular San Francisco personal trainer who always brings his aesthetic and crowd pleasure physique to the stage.  And, "Out of Africa" was  Paul Mwangale who earned his MM Pro status at MM Atlantic.  He trains in his Kenyan homeland and is an inspiration to all African bodybuilders.  The new MM Europe Champion and extremely animated Anthony Bessala of France took home Seventh Place in his MM Pro debut.  But, unfortunately, a disappointed Hugh Ross dropped from the Top 3 into Ninth Place.  The veteran natural champion has incredible muscle density but faced a whole new cadre of MM Pros.  Always a class act, Hugh brings stature and integrity wherever he competes.

Musclemania bodybuilders earning Professional Division status in Las Vegas and now qualify to compete at the MM Universe in Miami include Dewayne Malone, Genaro Alvarado, Nick Navarro, Richard Cory and Adam Plese.

Genaro, Who?
He hadn't competed for 15 years, but Genaro Alvarado has never quit training.  So, when he competed at the recent Musclemania World Championships, everyone back home in Michoacan, Mexico was surprised when they heard he had won.  "The whole town was watching the webcast, so everyone knew and celebrated after the show," said Genaro.

The 35 year old dental laboratory technician  has been training since he was 13 years old.   He explains, "I am the youngest of 7 brothers and all of us were into lifting weights and few of my brothers competed.  So, I was always around bodybuilders and bodybuilding."  At 5'5", 175 lbs., Genaro has
incredible shape, size, symmetry and most important, he poses like a seasoned professional.  "I always enjoy training, but I probably spend just as much time posing - like after every set, I bang out pose after pose after pose.  I really get into it.  So, when it came time to compete, posing was so was natural to me on stage.  Even at Musclemania with all of the people, I was so comfortable up there," Genaro describes.

As a warm-up just a few weeks before, he competed at the Musclemania Latino in Mexico City.  But, the results were far less than stellar.  Genaro admitted, "The show was my first in many years, so I was a little hesitant.  But, I knew I needed to qualify to compete in Las Vegas.  I knew I was not in the best shape and barely made it into the Top 5.  I was able to compete at the Worlds at got on my diet, seriously, dropped a lot of water and tightened my body  It really made a difference between the two shows."

Genaro is now training for the Musclemania Universe in Miami in June.  It will be his first MM Pro Division competition and the 5'5" powerhouse will face some goliath physiques much taller and heavier than him.  "Its no bother for me.  I am so motivated to diet harder and bring a complete like no one has ever seen on the Musclemania stage before," enthusiastically claimed Genaro.  "There will be no holidays for me, this year.  I am already on my game plan, training twice a day, on my diet and packing on muscle."  No doubt, he wants to make it so no one in Miami will be asking, "Genaro, who?"

New Champions, New Pros!
A dynamic group of competitors crashed the Musclemania stage in Las Vegas and bringing to the show a new look of bodybuilders to the line-up.  Winning the MM Pro World was Canadian sensation, Dickens Lambert (right), a 28 year old high school teacher from Montreal.  Already the winner of all major Canadian natural competition, he qualified just 4 weeks earlier at MM New York with his sights set on the MM Pro World.  In jubilation, Dickens said, “It was a great experience.  I didn’t think it would be so amazing, yet it truly was.”

In the MM World Division, a former Mexican Junior Champion returned from a 15 year absence to crush his competition.  Genaro Alvarado (left) has been a lifetime natural bodybuilder and never competed outside of his country.  But the 37 year old father three brought to the stage incredible shape, symmetry and classic posing reminiscent of Bob Paris, Frank Zane & Arnold Schwarzenegger.  At just 5’5”, 175 lbs., Genaro cast an image of someone a foot taller and 100 lbs. bigger!  His win has already generated incredible interest among natural Mexican bodybuilders who now feel more confident that drug free lifting has a promising and fruitful future for them.

Winning the MM America Division was Texas personal trainer DeWayne Malone (center).  The MW Class Winner was loaded with muscle, ripped to the bone and captured the eye of everyone and earning a perfect score from 5 of the 7 judges.  The 31 year old married father of four children says, “I have dedicated my life to natural bodybuilding and I love being on stage.”  And, now DeWayne will now move on to the MM Pro ranks and challenge the best natural bodybuilders in the world.  Miami, here he comes!

Model Madness
With each passing season, the Model World Tour gets more competitive with new and ever more impressive sports models walking the runway.  But at the recent Model America Championships in Las Vegas, how ironic was it when local favorite Alex Castro (center) captured the title for second straight time!  The 27 year old Chippendales dancer immigrated from Cuba ten years ago and just became an American citizen.  He has appeared in numerous magazines, advertisements and some commercials.  At 5’11”, 185 lbs., Alex was a competitive soccer player for many years become focusing on weight training and developing his whole body.

Runner-up Kyle Clark (second left) is a civil engineer and former US Army Captain.  He’s also a local fitness hero who enjoys modeling and acting but says he gets his rush from bull riding, racing cars, sky diving, ice hockey and, “Anything that give’s me an adrenaline rush!”

Taking Third Place was Greek sports model Grigorios Panselinas who at 6’2”, 215 lbs. was a striking image on stage.  The former track athlete has his BS in nutrition and food science and desires to be one of the most successful fitness model.  Currently residing in New York, Grigorios free lances with many agencies.

It was a surprising disappointment for Matus Valent who won the 2006 Model America held at Universal Studios Hollywood but had to settle for Fourth Place in Las Vegas.  Already an incredibly successful fitness & fitness model, the all around jock has his Masters Degree in Physical Education and played for the Slovakian Junior National Volleyball Team.  Since immigrating to the US 7 years ago, Matus has graced the cover and appeared in nearly 100 sports & fitness magazines worldwide.

Rounding out the Top 5 Finalists was Southern California native, Andre Benson.
The former semi-pro football player for the Avengers has been competing in the Model World Tour for 3 years and says that, “Every season, I find myself getting physically better.”  At 6’, 200 lbs, the 32 year old father of two sets of twins and a 17 year old daughter says training and competing is a challenge.  However, Andre also says that, “I am told by many people that I should give up due to having a big family, but I am here to win it for US!”

The 2010 Model World Tour begins in April at the Model Atlantic Championships at Mohegan Sun in Connecticut along.  Along with 50 other shows worldwide, the Tour leads to the Model Universe in Miami in June and Model America in Las Vegas in November.

Korean Muscle Wins Las Vegas
You knew something special was in store for the audience when Korean natural model and bodybuilding sensation Chul Soon Hwang took the stage.  His costume and attitude caught everyone’s attention but once the garb came off and he strutted his physique, they went crazy.  Perfectly symmetrical, incredibly ripped and with a stage presence and performance enough to make the Pros envious, Chul showed that Asian bodybuilders were just as prominent in the sport as their American counterparts.  His routine earned a perfect score in the Posing Round from the judges.  The 26 year old stage performer never competed in any competition until the new Musclemania Korea Championships was held in
September.  He said, “For 7 years, I have trained everyday.  I really love bodybuilding.  But, it took Musclemania and its natural competitions to convince me to compete.  I am not into drugs and never want to compete with steroid users.  For me, bodybuilding is all about looking good and living a healthy life.”  Chul placed second in the MM World MW Class and was the leader among Team Korea which sported 6 competitors in Las Vegas.  Next season, Musclemania Korea will present two shows and bring a team to both the MM Universe in Miami and MM World in Las Vegas.

Mayan Muscle
Like a Mayan King showing his physique to the Gods, Honduran bodybuilder Jhonny Vasquez presented an outstanding routine at the Musclemania World Championships.  The Hollywood style stage lighting helped the 5’8”, 170 lbs. the college student and personal trainer with his routine presentation.  He easily won the Posing Round but placed fourth in the MW Class.

Jhonny says it’s a financial challenge for him to come to Musclemania shows, but explains, “I save all year to be part of this competition.  I feel that if I am training hard, eating clean and making sacrifices to create the kind of body I want, then why compete at a second rate show?”  He lives
in San Pedro Sula which has just a couple of gyms and where access to supplements is fruitless.  Jhonny says, “I have to travel to other towns and cities to get the food I need.  Its not easy living here and trying to be a good natural bodybuilder.  But, the extra effort is really worth it.”

Musclemania Central America has grown immensely in popularity especially with the annual show held in Guatemala.  Last season, nearly 100 competitors vied for the rights to travel to the ’10 MM Universe and represent the region.

California Beach Bodies
There's nothing like beach bodies and a bevy of these tight physiques were in action at recent competed at Musclemania California.   Held in Hermosa Beach, the competition featured many new competitors including US Marine Corps. SStg Xavisus Gayden, a lean and mean, military trained natural bodybuilder.  Taking home the title, Xavisus has competed in only two competitions, but at 6', 200 lbs. his physique has the maturity of a more advanced lifter.  Winning the MW Class was Chris Albert, a Ph.D political science professor from Santa Barbara who won his class at the '09 MM Orange County.  James Martinez is a big, beefy and symmetrical bodybuilder who may have won the HW Class if he had been in better condition.  The US Air Force Airman from Albuquerque would be a threat if he continues his diet and prepares for MM America.  Another top tier competitor was Ben Serrtuchi from San Diego who started bodybuilding following many years as a gymnast and amateur boxer.  The 5'7", 170 lbs. US Navy Petty Officer has a complete package of size, shape and condition.  The biggest physique in the show was HW Thayer Hill, a 27 year old corporate exercise science manager.  At 5'8", 205 lbs., he has been competing as a Musclemania bodybuilder since winning the 2001 MM Delta Teenage Division and numerous other titles since.  With small bones and joints, Thayer always carries an illusion of 30 lbs. more than his actual weight, but was at least 10 lbs. off his mark this time.  Next season, the MM California Tour will host shows in San Diego, Orange County, two in Los Angeles, Santa Cruz and Sacramento.  Event Schedules will be finalized and posted soon.

Training for a Deserving Victory
Hidden in the hills of Transylvania, Viorel Ristea has been training his physique for years.  The 5'10", 210 lbs. athlete has always been a champion for natural bodybuilding in his native Romania.  As a former Soviet satellite, the country is known for its hard core athletic training programs.  And, Viorel has been a beneficiary its advance training methods.  He was a Top 5 Finalist in both the '07 Musclemania World and '09 Musclemania Universe.  But, in his most recent competition in Miami, many of the judges and audience felt that if Viorel had been in the same condition for the Prejudging as he was in the Finals, the contest would have been his.  "I was really disappointed because I thought I had a
winning physique at the show", Viorel said backstage.  With tremendous muscle fullness, density and symmetry, the 25 year old government administrator had trained for 12 months for the show.  He explained, "My wife and I sacrificed so much so that I could compete in America.  It really is a dream of mine to win Musclemania."  Viorel works two jobs, has a local Bucharest sponsor to support his training supplementation and trains on a twice a day, 4 x week training regimen.  "I always train heavy throughout the year to maximize my size but with isolation movements to focus on symmetry," Viorel says. He is currently training for Musclemania World in Las Vegas and wants to bring to the stage a top form, winning physique.  "I want a big and beautiful body deserving of that Musclemania victory!"

Modern Muscle
Old World Europe brought some amazing modern bodies in force to the recent Musclemania Europe held in Milan, Italy.  Many of the continent's most impressive natural bodybuilders shattered expectations with amazing physiques like France's Anthony Bessala.  Winning the Men's Open Division, the towering 6'2" government clerk dominated the competition with size, symmetry and condition.  Anthony was '09 MM Universe LHW Top 5 Finalist. He's originally from the Ivory Coast in Africa, Bessala, has been lifting for just 5 years and won nearly every natural European competition.  Natural sports fitness athletes and bodybuilders from Greece, Cyprus, England, Ireland, France, Italy, Spain,
Ukraine, Czech Republic, Romania and other countries competed in the Musclemania, Ms. Bikini, Figure, Fitness & Model Divisions.  More photos will be posted in the Gallery soon.

Missing the Stage
You could say that his popularity is only surpassed by the length of his dreads.  And in a recent edition of REPS! magazine, MM Pro Ulisses showed why his physique sets international standards among natural bodybuilding.  The 29 year old New Yorker recently moved to London, England, to open a new personal training studio and be closer to his family.  At 5'10", 215 lbs., Ulisses never breaches 5% body fat even in the off-season, so preparing for competition isn't ever anything more than adjusting his water, lowering carbs and intensifying his workouts.  He explains, "Bodybuilding is a year round lifestyle for me.  I just have to stay in shape."  For Ulisses, that means a diet heavy on extra lean meat, turkey, fish,
veggies, flak seed and whole grains.  "I really don't rely on all those supplements except when it comes to competition training.  Then, I add a 100% whey protein isolate, choline and some other goodies."

After a five year layoff from competition, Ulisses is pounding heavy duty weights again and preparing for his return to the Musclemania stage.  "I did all that modeling stuff for a while stuff, but really miss the stage," said Ulisses.  "I guess the bug is back!"  We'll have to wait to see if Ulisses will be ready by November for the MM World in Las Vegas or wait for MM Universe in Miami.  "Ya know, I always listen to my body and when its ready to compete, you'll know it."

Winning Family Genetics
The recent Musclemania Universe hosted some incredible first timers with surprising results.  Truly the biggest natural bodybuilding show ever to hit South Beach delivered on its marketing hype.  And, most notable was the Open Men's Heavyweight Class where a dozen 200 lbs. plus bodybuilders wooed the audience.  Winning the class was first time Musclemania bodybuilder, Antwaun Smith , a dominating 5'11", 215 lbs. heavyweight.  The Las Vegas electrical contractor competed in a few untested shows before attempting his first natural competition.  Under the tutelage of his uncle, former IFBB Pro Kevin Levrone, Antwaun learned from childhood about bodybuilding training and dieting.  "I used to
go to the gym with him all the time.  And, my Mom would prepare all of Kevin's meals, so I knew how to eat right for size and condition," said Antwaun.  "Hanging out with him at the gym when I was kid really taught me the discipline I needed.  I learned from the best."  His shape is along the classic lines of his Uncle Kevin with full bellies, broad shoulders and a small 28" waist.  Antwaun's off season weight never exceeds 15 lbs. above competition shape and always maintains a clean diet.  He explains, "I work construction, so I am always on my feet, moving around and on the go.  So, it really helps me stay in shape."  As a newcomer to Musclemania, Antwaun was a big hit in Miami with the fans and media.  Like a lot of other competitors at the show, Antwaun was a surprise to the Musclemania crowd and the other competitors.  He beat '07 Musclemania Junior Champion Jiri Borkovec (2nd Place), Mr. Romania Viorel Ristea and a host of other impressive HW physiques.  Following the contest, REPS! magazine shot a training profile with Antwaun on South Beach with other shoots scheduled.  He will be making his MM Pro debut later this season at the MM Superbody in New York and MM Pro World in Las Vegas.

Conditioned for Top 5 -
-
Cutting into the Top 5 among the Musclemania Pros for the first time, Kevin Love brought an aesthetic, 6'2", 215 lbs. physique to the MM stage and world class posing routine.  Presenting a Trojan warrior theme at the Finals, he earned the highest score helping to  push himself into his best placing since becoming a MM Pro at MM Florida six years ago.  The 32 year old former collegiate basketball player and US Air Force military policeman feels that he got a fair shake by the MM judges.  Kevin explains, "This is the first time competing as a Pro that I thought the Pre-Judging was done fairly.  They clearly took their time and did various comparisons.  Even though I got 4th place, I was happy with being fairly
judged."   But, of course, his scores were well deserved because Kevin was in better condition that ever before while still holding as much size as in any prior MM Pro competition.  As a Federal air marshall, he trains with an erratic schedule, in different cities and gyms every week.  But his mobility does not affect Kevin's dedication and consistency.  He still trains 5 times per week and maintains a clean, competitive diet throughout the season.

David & Goliath
As expected, the heralded Musclemania Professionals were geared to rock the house at MM Universe.  And, everyone expected 2x Champion Jeffrey Beckham to sweep the title again.  With his dominating 6'2", 230 lbs. physique, it would take an equally massive or uniquely shaped bodybuilder to knock Jeff off his throne.  And, this would be the year where Jeff met his match from an unsuspecting foe.  Going to head-to-head was David Lovelace who weighed 30 lbs. lighter but was ripped, symmetrical and packed a powerful physique.  The Ft. Lauderdale personal trainer did not crack the Top 5 at the '08 MM Pro World in Las Vegas, but brought to Miami a completely new look.  "I followed a
new diet keeping higher protein intake and a lot more cardio for the past 5 months.  It really made a difference.  I actually added muscle while preparing for the contest," said David following the show.  Chasing Jeff was first time MM Pro Bill Simpson , a San Francisco personal trainer who weighs only 180 lbs. but outclasses his competition with incredible classic symmetry and condition.  Bill has appeared in numerous magazine ad campaigns and popular with commercial photographers.  David has been competing for nearly 10 years and works for Bally's Health & Fitness.  Jeff trains in Brooklyn, New York, and has been a dominating force on the MM World Tour since becoming a Pro three years ago.  There will be heading to MM Superbody in New York and MM World in Las Vegas to continue his MM Pro rule.

Swahili Crosses the Atlantic -
-
When Kenyan bodybuilding star Paul Mwangale asked for permission from Musclemania to compete at the recent Atlantic show, the initial response wasn't what he wanted to hear.  So, he appealed to the local promoter, Brian Cannone, and explained that he would be in the US around the time of the competition and explained, "I will be honored to compete on the Musclemania, again."  So, how could you say "no" to Paul who was a Top 5 Finalist at the 2007 Musclemania Universe in Miami and wanted to win this time.  But this time, the body was different and so were the results.  The 32 year old, Kenyan gym owner easily won over the more established, New England competitors
taking both the MW Class and Musclemania Atlantic title.

According to NTpowerhouse.com , an African bodybuilding website, " Paul owns the only bodybuilding gym in the agricultural city Kericho. He is one of Africa's best natural bodybuilders of all time and has won more bodybuilding trophies than any other bodybuilder from Western Kenya.  He has competed at local, continental and international events, he is one of the few African natural bodybuilders to have achieved that.  He is happily married and has two sons.  Born in the city of Eldoret and the last born of thirteen children Paul moved to Eldoret a few years back. He works for The Walter Reed Project as an AIDS awareness promoter. He is a public figure in the city of Kericho and is commonly referred to as th e Lion of Kericho . "

Paul's training consists of each body part per week but specializes as needed.  His diets consists mostly of boiled rice, Ugali and potatoes.  He also eats meat, fish, vegetables and fruits in his daily diet.

Paul says that he could not be a successful bodybuilder with his family's support.  He explains, "My wife, my mum and my sponsor (one of the directors of James Finley tea company) play a very important role in my bodybuilding career.  They give me courage to train harder."

Paul says that, "Winning Musclemania Atlantic has given me more experience and is the highlight of my bodybuilding career. "

Brooklyn Body

Cruising by a public housing project in Brooklyn, New York, you usually see kids outside on the swing sets and jungle gyms.  And, on the basketball courts, there's always a pick-up game among the local hoopsters.  But, you also regularly catch John Jackson using the exercise bars to do one arm pull-ups, dips, push-ups, sit-ups and other calisthenics.  Without any formal training, guidance or fancy gym equipment, the 22 year old maintenance worker has developed a shockingly massive, symmetrical and powerful physique but which has never competed or even seen a bodybuilding competition.  "I've been lifting since I was 19 and really enjoy the pump
and how it feels when I'm training," explains

John.  "But, I don't know anything about formal training, sports nutrition or competing."  At 5'10", 220 lbs., John lifts some incredible poundages and grows fast.  "I train for the feel," he describes.  "If a muscle says, '"Train me today"', I do it.  And, if a muscle group is still sore, I let it recuperate."

Now, after nearly 4 years of training, John says he wants to compete and make his public debut.  "I think its time.  I want to make it real," he asserts.  "I get so many people asking me whether I compete and I just laugh.  I really never got into bodybuilding to compete.  I did not even know anything about it besides Arnold.  But, I know I don't want to use drugs.  It's just not me, man!"  But that's not scaring John from showing up ready to compete.  "I'm been saving money and just bought some protein powder, creatine, glutamine, nitric oxide and a bunch of other stuff.  I've really relied upon just food up to this point, you know, chicken, beef, lots of eggs and other stuff."

John is training for Musclemania New York in October and has set lofty goals.  "I want to make all of this hard work to pay off," he claims.  "Already I get crazy responses from people everywhere in the city, so why not at contest, too? I know I can do it.  I am making this happen!"

Winning Strategy -
-
After winning the '08 Musclemania Pro World, Morris Mendez has been hitting the gym but without any focus on future competitions.  Recognized around the world as the preeminent natural bodybuilder, Morris has appeared on magazine covers, articles, commercials and advertising campaigns.  But the 5'10", 220 lbs. superstar isn't letting on what will be his next competitive move.  "I'm just training hard and working on my physique.  I still think I have room for improvement," admits Morris.  He is a strategist when it comes to planning his competition plans, so we'll just have to wait until he feels his physique is ready again and the timing is right.  Despite not being ready for competition, he will be
shooting a portfolio in Miami during the Universe Weekend and on hand to support new Musclemania competitors.  Morris will also be part of the Musclemania Training Seminar being held at the MM Universe discussing the virtues of natural bodybuilding and how to develop your physique without using drugs.

From Fat Boy to Phat Man

In high school he says he was a "fat boy!" But things began to change for new MM Pro Bill Simpson in his senior year. "I never played any sports, but I decided to loose weight for graduation and began to lift weights," says Bill. "I lost 6' in my waistline in six months." After graduation, Bill keep training in local gyms and soon friends and other members witnessed his transformation from bulky to lean. "I would get questions whether I had thought about competing in bodybuilding competitions," Bill remembers. "My answer was always that I enjoyed working out and that if I competed in a bodybuilding competition it would suddenly become ‘work’. But after some self analysis, I realized that the reason I had not

competed was more about my fear and lack of knowledge of the sport. So I decided that I would compete in one competition. The first contest was a disaster and all I could think afterwards was how I could improve for the next time. The next issue for me was competing in competitions where competitors were not tested for steroids. I got tired of losing to obviously enhanced competitors. So, in 2004, I competed in my first ‘tested’ competition. I finally won my weight class and I was hooked."

Bill won the MM America LHW Class in Las Vegas last November earning his MM Pro card and is training for his MM Pro debut at MM Universe in June.
At 5'10", 185 lbs., with incredible symmetry and great muscle fullness, he will bring a classic look to the stage.

The San Francisco native is a certified trainer and says he lives by same virtues and discipline he preaches to his clients. Bill explains, "Our bodies are wonderful, complex machines that will serve us well for a lifetime if we maintain them properly. Listen to it and it will tell you when something is not right. I generally train two muscle groups a day. Legs, I train on a day by themselves. I take one day off a week. My workouts are progressive. I don’t just jump in and lift the heaviest weight I can. And, I stretch, stretch and stretch some more!"

Nutritionally, Bill eats clean year round but doesn't believe in a lot of sports nutrition. "Less is more," he says. "I see how far my body takes me using a basic multivitamin, good nutrition and my own natural abilities. I do my homework about using supplements. The supplement industry is unregulated and therefore companies can make any claims that they want to. So, I look for documented facts, case studies and let science be the deciding factor. But basically, I try to get all my nutrition from whole foods. Sometimes that is not possible and I resort to a shake or bar. I eat 6 times a day, making sure each meal contains lean protein, carbs and a good fat."

Bill says his ultimate goals are simple. "I want to be the best I possibly can be and a good example of what a lifestyle of fitness can produce." Bodybuilding has helped him reach many achievements in his life and no doubt many more in the future.

Sportsmen of the Year

Upon his return to the Philippines, '08 MM Universe Champion Derrick Ternida (photo-left) was hailed a national hero!  Recently at the Philippine Sports Writers Association Annual Awards Night he was a recipient of the Sportsman of the Year Award along with World Boxing Champion Nonito Donaire (photo-right).  Derrick has been competing on the Musclemania World Tour for over 5 years laying claim to the '06 MM Superbody LW Class and the '08 MM Universe MW and Overall title.  At 5'5", 175 lbs., he has improved his physique in each subsequent year and is regarded as the senior spokesman for the sport of bodybuilding in the Philippines.  He tours the country giving seminars, exhibitions, television appearances about natural nutrition and healthy lifestyles.  Joining Derrick in hailing the Musclemania banner in the Philippines are veteran Rey Pancho and rising stars Alejo Manuel, Mark Banzon, Gerald Pagan and Ronnie Singson all of whom will be competing at Musclemania World in Las Vegas in November.

Missing In Action
Two Musclemania Pros with the biggest fan followings are Ulisses Jr. and Syed Fazli , yet neither bodybuilder have appeared on stage in years.  Ulisses won the '04 MM Universe in Miami and Syed a Top 5 Finalist at the '07 MM Universe and since then both have pursued their commercial careers.  Syed said recently, "I have been training but only to keep my body in shape - not adding more size."  The 30 year old personal trainer who is a fitness star in his native Malaysia has appeared in numerous television commercials and dozens of print advertising campaigns in the past year.  "It is really satisfying that all the training and hard work is really paying off.  When I started lifting in my early 20's, it was only a dream that I make a living with my bodybuilding," Syed confessed.  For the past few years, Ulisses has focused on his personal training business and toured around the world with crooner Harry Connick, Jr.  "Having an opportunity to work in a professional entertainment environment was really cool and gave me a chance to learn the ropes about marketing yourself and developing business relationships," Ulisses explained.  Late last year, he relocated his family from New York City where he lived his entire life to London, England.  "My wife's entire family is from England and wanted to move home.  Plus, we felt it was a good place to raise our son and to go to school."  Since moving, Ulisses has been working on opening his own personal training studio in London which will be ready in April.  He said, "Having my own gym will help me train and get back into competition.  I am already weighing 210 lbs. and really want to return to Musclemania with a completely new body.  I am dying to get back.  I am so motivated!"  As for Syed, he said, "If the commercial jobs slow down, I will start training heavy again and return to the stage."

Junior Stars
They may be first timers and novices to the natural bodybuilding scene, but many new Musclemania Juniors are training to shake up competitions this season.  Since Junior stars Larry Camacho ('08 MM America Junior Champ) and Yumon Eaton ('08 MM Universe Junior Champ) are now moving up to the Open Divisions, a new line-up of Juniors will be vying for top honors on the Musclemania World Tour.  At last year's MM Universe, a bevy of new bodybuilders stormed the Junior Division including Aaron Neifeld , Charley Montriel , Dustin Elliott , Jonathan Irizarry ('08 MM Universe Junior LW Champ), Fernando Villeriano and Alan Valdez (photo R-L).  All 22-and-under, these impressive bodybuilders have been training all year to return to Miami aiming to take home the gold.  Dustin is a Miami college student and New Mexico high school student Fernando both hope to compete with 10 lbs. more muscle by June.  Jonathan won three local Texas shows last year and is training hard to win the overall MM Universe title.   Alan competed at the '08 Model America Championships and surprised everyone by taking 2nd Place and beating over 60 other sports models all of whom were older, too.  Throughout the season, we will introduce new juniors whom will surprise the Musclemania World Tour and natural bodybuilding scene.

Military Muscle
Training for bodybuilding isn't much different than playing soccer, football, wrestling or boxing, at least according to Jose Ibarra.  His attitude all comes from his father's influence.  "He always pushed me to be better and want more from myself," Jose explains.  In his early years playing sports, his father was always a motivating force.  So, when Jose picked up his first set of weights in the 9th grade, his competitive ethic just carried over.

The US Army Specialist is now currently deployed in Iraq as a lead gunner for a personal security detachment.  Jose says, "My job consists of taking high ranking officials to their destination safely.  We also run countless missions and serve as a quick reaction task force.  Meaning we go out if something happens in order to secure the area."  As expected, the active military career creates demands and challenges upon Jose dissimilar to civilian bodybuilders.   He reflects, "Well, working out while deployed gets rough at times. For example, I'm on a 24 hour QRF shift right now so I had to wake at 4 AM to train before my shift.  Luckily I still get to sleep on shift.  During mission times I work out before when i have more energy. The hardest thing is being prepared so I don't interrupt my eating schedule.  I constantly have food on me or in the cooler. I never miss a meal or a workout!  It just takes extra effort.

This month, Jose completes his second 15 month deployment and will return to Texas.  He says, "I'm definitely looking forward to training state side again."  The 5'9", 175 lbs. soldier has vast knowledge and experience about training which has helped him develop an incredible natural physique.  "I love to train!, Jose asserts.  "I don't know where I'd be without it.  It keeps me sane I guess.  I cycle different workouts and like to incorporate new things to keep my body from stagnating towards one type of training.  Right now I cycle 3 different programs.  I try to keep things simple. I change the variables each week. Meaning rest time, rep tempo, weight, and rep range will all be different. I like to throw in super sets and giant sets on my high rep weeks. I do dead lifts on heavy training weeks. I tend to stick to drop sets and yo-yo's when I train with higher weight. For clarification a "yo-yo" is a drop set, but on the last set you jump back up the your starting weight.  I like to stay in the sweet spots when I train to keep constant tension on the muscle."

Jose has developed a physique of extreme muscle maturity and attests much of his condition to sound nutrition.  "I believe that nutrition is the key to success," Jose confirms.  "It can take awhile to get it right.  I've made the mistake of lowering my calories too low a few times and taking to much off.  I eat 6 meals a day every 3 hours on off days. On training days I like to eat 3,200 calories between 9 meals. I have a fast metabolism, so my calories consists of 48% protein, 36% carbs and 16% fat. On off days I lower that to 2,700 calories.  I'm also really active on my down time out here (in Iraq).  I like to stick to the basic supplements. I take whey protein, BCAA's, glutamine and creatine.

When he returns back to the US, Jose will begin preparing for Musclemania Universe in Miami.  He says, "I want to win big shows.  Musclemania has the greatest physiques and its a honor to compete against these guys.  I have a long road set out in front of me. There are many remarkable physiques out there."  But, Jose's ambitions go beyond competitive bodybuilding.  "My ambitions are to pursue a modeling career.  It's always been a dream of mine to appear in a magazine.  I don't think I can rest until I complete that mission."  No doubt, Jose will rely on his father's influence in these competitive and commercial ambitions, too.

Musclemania Party Town
It was well deserved partying after the Musclemania World in Las Vegas for Morris Mendez (1st) and Hugh Ross (2nd) who cruised the town with champagne and fitness ladies in tow.  For Morris it was his first competition since the '05 MM World, but he trained all year to take home the world's #1 natural title.  And, although is was Hugh's second MM World runner-up finish in as many years, he was just as elated with his performance.  Morris brought to the show his classic shape, symmetry and presentation while Hugh was massive and ripped like no one else on stage.  Both MM Pros have set their sights on MM Universe in June where they want to take out Jeff Beckham who has won the show two times straight!  Taller and bigger than Morris and Hugh, Jeff (6'1", 235 lbs.) feels he has the upper edge on both.  But, Morris (5'10", 205 lbs.) and Hugh (5'11", 210 lbs.) brings to the stage unparalleled physiques.  In the weeks ahead, more MM Pros will be featured including New England sensation Germaine Morgan, first timers Bill Simpson of San Francisco, Victor Montoya of Honduras, Bradley Aubrey of Florida and other great new natural stars.

New Testing Rules
When the urinalysis drug test results were reported following the recent Musclemania World and America Championships in Las Vegas , a quick analysis showed a surprisingly high number of international competitors had tested positive. It was almost as if some were completely naive that Musclemania World Tour events are promoted as natural, drug free shows or just chose to ignore the rules and cheated their way to the show.  Consider that all of the positive tests were competitors from outside North America including every member of Team China !

As promoters, we were astonished and disappointed.  But, most of all, we feel that it cheated some of the truly natural competitors from being able to bask in their legitimate placing with their family & friends present to witness.  And, there's the loss of deserved public, media recognition (photos, magazines, video, etc.) and other accolades.

So, how do we as promoters make this right?  How do we make certain that in the future the right competitors win?  And, how do we deflect drug users from entering Musclemania shows so that they compete only in organizations where steroid use is condoned?  One step is to establish rules that all international competitors must register and make themselves available for urinalysis testing two full days before the competition.  Since the certified testing laboratory can expedite samples with advance notice, the drug test results of international competitors and selected others can be reported before the Finals with anyone testing positive immediately disqualified from the show before they are able to step on stage.

In the weeks ahead, more changes to the drug testing procedures will be made to ensure that the Musclemania World Tour honors its traditions and is truly natural for all competitors. We welcome your comments and suggestions.

America & World Championships in Las Vegas
With the most impressive natural bodybuilders ever seen on one stage, the recent Musclemania America & World Championships was a spectacle of muscle mass, incredible shape and diced condition.  Sweeping the MM Pro World was Morris Mendez who's been out of site for three years.  The 39 year old youth counselor delivered a complete package and was able to beat 2007  MM Pro World winner Ricardo Plata of Columbia who was in his best form ever.  The MM America Champion was Las Vegas local natural hero Carl Matthew Jr., a heavyweight who's won many other natural and non-tested shows but was never able to conquer the Musclemania title.  Close behind was an imposing Adrain Childers of Colorado who at 6'2", 230 lbs. has an amazing future in natural bodybuilding.  Following the show, he said, "I should have been heavier and promise to rise in Miami (MM Universe) weighing close to 250!"  In the LHW Class Korean veteran bodybuilding veteran Son Young Joo narrowly beat out Rod Stanley.  But in one of the most competitive races in the show was MW Class star and San Francisco native Bill Simpson who surprised everyone with incredible shape and muscle maturity.  He beat Texas star DeWayne Malone who was packed with muscle but needing more diet and Moses Ajala who had his usually amazing muscle quality.  Following the Athletes Meeting, Bill asked what it took to become a Musclemania Pro and now he has the answer.  Probably one of the most improved bodybuilders was Victor Montoya of Honduras who competed 5 lbs. heavier and with better condition that at MM Universe earlier in the season.  The 5'6", 160 lbs. personal trainer posed like a champion and earned the title and with it MM Pro status.  Two amazing Juniors were equally impressive but in different ways.  Winner Larry Camacho competed 10 lbs. heavier than last year and spellbound the audience with classic shape and posing.  But dominating in height and structure was Junior Runner-Up and Novice HW Champ Nick Del Toro, a Houston area college student who at 6'3", 220 lbs. could crush his competition at MM Universe in June.  The show was probably the best Musclemania America & World  seen in years and more reports, profiles and photos will be posted in the days ahead.

Victories at Last! -
-
Two of the most improved natural bodybuilders in Las Vegas were MM America Junior Champ Larry Camacho and MM World LW Champ Victor Montoya who both were disappointed with recent contest placings but have returned with amazing improvements.   Larry last competed at the '07 MM World placing 3rd and Victor at the '08 MM Universe placing 2nd.  But with an added 10 lbs. and 5 lbs., respectively, and with even better conditioning, there was no doubt who should have won this time.  Larry is a 21 year old college student in Long Beach, CA, who at 19 years old first competed in 2006.  But he will take a sabbatical of sorts from serious bodybuilding training when he
enters the California Highway Patrol Academy soon.Larry recently said, "I love bodybuilding and being on stage.  But at 180 lbs. I can't possibly expect to do the kind of running and training required at the academy."  So, don't expect to see Larry on stage next season.  But, he added, "I'll be back bigger and better once I am working and able to catch up in the gym. I'm just beginning!"  Victor is a husband and father from Honduras and won the 2006 MM Central America but it has taken him three international MM shows to win.  At 5'6", 170 lbs., he says, "I know what it takes to build my body and now that I am with my friend Ricardo (Plata) and the other MM Pros, I am so motivated to transform my physique."  The 27 year old personal trainer said he dreams about training in the US someday.

Metropolitan Bash!
With many of the East Coast's most impressive athletes, the recent Fitness New York Championships couldn't have been more exciting!  There was a bunch of new bodies who'd never competed including Novice's Greg Rossi and Derek Gibson , two amazing Philly musclemen trained by Mr. Pennsylvania Joe Patton .  He won the LHW Class with classic shape and full muscle bellies.  HW Class winner Anthony Ferguson came all the way from the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia with a massive and symmetrical physique.  And Junior Champ Pean Saliasi , a local Queens college student, impressed the audience with his 200+ lbs. body.  Next week, a full Musclemania New York report will be posted with behind-the-scenes photos and results.

Southeast Asian Connection
We recently heard from Musclemania Pros Syed Fazli (left) and Ade Rai, Asia's most successful natural bodybuilders.  Syed last competed at the 2007 MM Pro Superbody and Ade hasn't seen a Musclemania stage since winning the 2000 MM Pro World.  Over the past year, Syed has been busy appearing in numerous Malaysian television commercials and advertising campaigns.  The 5'8", 210 lbs. star is one of the country's most prolific athletic successes stories.   Ade is legendary in his native Indonesia as a television fitness star. Ade owns a chain of health clubs, sports nutrition, athletic sportswear and equipment companies.  But due to chronic training injuries, he says, "I think my competition days are over.  It's up to the younger guys to pick-up where I left off."  Ade has always been a role model for Indonesian bodybuilders while promoting natural health and fitness.  Syed says, "I'll be back soon.  Its exciting and interesting being part of the television industry, but I really miss competing."  Like Ade, Syed credits bodybuilding for his current high tide.  He says, "None of these other things would be happening if it wasn't for my training."  Hopefully, we will see Syed competing on the MM stage again soon and welcome Ade as a special guest.

Texas Swagger -
-
The recent Musclemania Texas may have featured some impressive natural physiques, but first time competitor Tyler Dean posed with a swagger reminiscent of a veteran ace.  The 29 year old pharmaceutical salesman had developed such an impressive off-season physique that his gym buddies finally convince him to diet, tan and hit the posing dais.  The former collegiate wrestler easily won both the Novice and Open Men's Divisions with his 5'7", 175 lbs. physique.  "Fitness has taught me so much about discipline, setting goals, perseverance, dedication and believing in myself," said Tyler.  He says he wants to work on his symmetry and come into Musclemania America in Las Vegas
with an even more complete physique.

Musclemania Honor Roll
Since winning the recent Musclemania Universe, Derrick Ternida has been ecstatic.  "Its been a dream for me," he recently wrote.  "I have been training every year to reach this goal in my career.  Its been so tough for my wife and I, always seeking sponsors for my training, supplements and travel to America."  Every year since 2003, Derrick made the long journey from the Philippines winning his weight class twice. Now with his newly earned Musclemania Pro status, Derrick has returned home a national Filipino hero.  "When I got home, the Municipality of Taytay, Rizal, honored me with an award for outstanding citizenship for making the people of Taytay proud after winning the MMU.  And, the Rizal Provincial Governor Casimiro A. Ynares III, MD approved a resolution congratulating me on my Musclemania victory."  For American bodybuilders, receiving civic honors for winning bodybuilding competitions is more than unusual.  But for many international competitors, bodybuilding is an avenue for them to set their career paths.  Derrick explains, "I want to change things here  in the Philippines so that  my countrymen can excel in sports like bodybuilding - not just boxing. I want to promote the sport in the Philippines. I've become a sensation because I came home with a world class level title in the USA.  Now I must continue to earn the respect of my fellow sportsmen."

The Waiting Game
He had never visited America, but that did not stop 19 year old Jiri Borkovec from storming over the Junior Division competition at the '07 Musclemania Universe in Miami.  At 5'10", 185 lbs., the Czech national had already won the National and European Junior Championships before taken on the world's best.  "I've had been training since 13 years old and wanted to wait until I was ready and confident," said Jiri.  But since last year's show, he's been training so he can return next year and move into the Men's Open Division.  Jiri explains, "I have the muscle condition, but now I am just focusing on size, size, size.  My goal is 95 kg (209 lbs.), so I am waiting for two years.  I want to win the overall title and become a
Musclemania Pro."  Jiri owns his own sports supplement mail order company and wants to develop a chain of nutrition stores.

Paki Pride
Two former Pakistan National Champions came to make their mark at MM Universe.  Ashfaq Butt, a mammoth 6'2", 226 lbs. South Asian bodybuilder won the HW Class, and Shoaib Zahor, a legendary Paki who is known for his incredible shape.  Ashfaq beat out an awe inspiring line-up of 200+ pounders to earn his MM Pro card.  But Shoaib narrowly missed being a LW Class Top 5 Finalist due to water retention resulting from the long 17,000 mile flight from Islabadad to Miami.  This was Ashfaq's second foray on the Musclemania World Tour having placed last year in Hollywood.  He said he was determined to returned home to train, increase his muscle mass and bring back to Musclemania a new physique.  "I was so impressed last year that I knew I what I had to do to win, especially working on my calves and hamstrings.  The American judges want symmetry, so it was my priority for the past six months," explained Ashfaq.  Both bodybuilders train at Shoaib's gym in Lahore, Pakistan, where many of the country's best bodybuilders can be found training in large home gyms, sport clubs and a burgeoning commercial fitness centers.  Now that Ashfaq has earned MM Pro status, he professed that, "It has been such a personal, financial and professional sacrifice. It means so much to have earned this level in my career.  It it would be such an honor and want my family and country to be proud, too."  Both Ashfaq and Shoaib have six month stays on their US visas and will remain in the US and compete at MM World in Las Vegas in November.  Says Shoaib, "I don't plan on returning home without a first place trophy this time."

Double Trouble -
-
It was an intense show in Miami where MM Pro Universe Champion Jeff Beckham was the dominate victor.  The 6'1", 225 lbs., 27 year old, Queens, New York, personal trainer was bigger than his less than stellar shape at the '07 MM Pro World but you know he felt good about himself and had no problem telling the audience so during his posing routine.  "Nobody trains harder than me . . . Nobody!," he rapped.  "Just this morning I wrestled and alligator, tussled with a whale, handcuffed thunder and put lighting in jail.  I murdered a rock, injured a stone, and hospitalized a brink.  I'm so ill I make medicine sick!  You Pros better battle for Number Two cause Number One - I got this title on lock down son!"  Yes, the guy
thinks highly of himself.  But he was in hot pursuit by new MM Pro Jermaine Morgan, the twenty year old sensation who was just off his big win at MM Atlantic.  Other impressive MM Pros included '07 MM Pro World Champion Ricardo Plata, Sean Larson and David Lovelace, but no one had the condition needed to knock off big Jeff.

Lost Leader
Having never even seen a bodybuilding competition before, Floridian personal trainer Marcus Major had to be convinced by his buddies to diet and prepare for MM Universe.  The 26 year old former prep four sport letterman says he always had great genetics.  "In high school, I would lift weights after football practice just because I liked doing it," said Marcus.  "The coaches and other guys thought I was using steroids because I was always muscular, but I did not even know what the stuff was."  And, when Marcus signed up for the Novice HW Class at the MM Universe, his high school weight lifting foundation almost paid off big time.  Following the Prejudging, he had the highest score - so high that Marcus could
have just stood on stage at the Finals and not hit a single pose and still won!  But, when the backstage expeditors called for the Novice HW Class, Marcus was no where to be found.  So, the show went on without him and when Marcus finally appeared, his class was already leaving the stage.  At 5'10", 210 lbs. with classic shape, he never got to show his posing routine even though he would have won the Novice Division with just his Prejudging score.  Marcus says he's encouraged by the judges scores and is now pumping hard to take MM Florida in Tampa on November 1 and then on to MM America in Las Vegas on November 21-22.  "I know I blew it, but I also know now what it takes to win", Marcus admitted.  "You'll see me soon and next time with that Musclemania winner's cup."

10th Anniversary Extravaganza
Nearly 500 natural bodybuilders, fitness, bikini, figure and model competitors from around the world all focused on Miami, Florida, for the recent Universe Weekend.  The largest audiences ever attended plus many industry leaders exhibited created a jammed venue. Then, over 400 fitness fans crashed the After Party at Mansion's in South Beach with everything being wrapped on Sunday afternoon at the Beach & Pool Party at Shore Club. The incredible response to the 10th anniversary show featured some of the hottest stars and bevy of new Musclemaniacs including New York HW Jeff Beckham, 1st Pro, Mr. Pakistan Asfaq Butt 1st HW Open, Chilean sensation Juan Pablo Salgado 3rd HW Open, Florida Junior Powerlifting Champion Yumon Eaton 1st Junior HW and many others.  The Universe Weekend was a spectacular experience and plans are already being made to expand the show next year. Complete results are posted and the Gallery will be updated soon.

Influential Friends -
-
For years, New Yorker Ahmed Rhodes has been training everyday after work.  As a UPS driver, he's always attracting attention walking into businesses to drop-off and pick-up packages and getting comments and questions about his impressive 5'11", 200 lbs. physique.  He says, "I try to model here and there when I can. But, I'm a simple man.".  It was Ahmed's friends that have finally convinced him to compete at Musclemania Universe.   At 37 years of age, Ahmed says, "I have never entered anything like this before. I was told it is a lot of fun and there are a whole lot of sexy in shape women from around the world that show up at this show."   The Bronx native has taken on life's challenges and made it
work for him.  He explains, "I left home when I was 15 years old and all three of my brothers are in the pen.  But, I have two boys of my own and they are what I strive for in life."  And, it is Ahmed's continuing desire to challenge himself in life to win Musclemania Universe.

Return of a Titan
It's been over a year and a half since anyone has seen MM Pro David Whittaker on stage, but the California bodybuilding scene has been talking a lot about him lately.  Rumor has it that the 6'3" giant has packed on some serious size weighing nearly 250 lbs. with just 4% body fat!  The scuttlebutt is that David is holding off before returning to the posing dias until he can completely overwhelm everyone, even juiceheads.  During his last competitive season, he won both the MM Pro Universe and MM Pro World.  But there's a lot of new bodies on the MM Pro stage and David will have to deal with some fresh new muscle.  And, will he be able to take on the incredibly popular and shape of Morris Mendez and the sheer
mass of Jeff Beckham?  And, what about the return of Rob Terry, another 6'3" mass monster who's been training with the WWE?  It all foretells a clash of the natural bodybuilding titans this season!

I Am Here and Ready! -
-
Since moving to Ft. Lauderdale two years ago, MM Pro David Lovelace has amped his game plan.  The 5'10", 195 lbs. life time natural bodybuilder won MM Pro status last year at MM Universe and has layed low the entire year to make his debut.  But his training has been consistent ever since his first competition.  "I love training, but I keep it balanced with martial arts and lots of basketball," explained David.  The 31 year old Bally's personal trainer has gained 30 lbs. of muscle over the past 5 years. "I only gain about 5-7 lbs. of muscle every year, but I stay in shape all season . . . never getting more than 10 lbs. out of shape."  And, David says he's been training this year especially hard out to take down Jeff Beckham and Jermaine Morgan at MM
Universe in Miami.  He explains, "We're all from the Northeast and I've seen these guys move up.  But, now it's my turn to show them what intensity and desire is all about. I took the right steps to get here and now I am here and I am ready!"

Team India Prepares for Miami
After a sensational inaugural performance on the Musclemania World Tour, Team India is preparing a squad of 10 bodybuilders for MM Universe.  With just 4 bodybuilders at the '07 MM World, they still able to captured the BW Class title and 3 other Top 5 placings including Krishna Murthy (photo) and aim to become Team Champions in Miami.  Lead by Indian Body Building Federation President Madhav Pujari, over 30 officials, trainers, coaches and supporters will also make up the Indian delegation.  The organization recently held a special selection competition in New Delhi at which over 300 bodybuilders competed to be a member of  Musclemania Team India at MM Universe.  The delegation will leave from New Delhi, Mombai and Calcutta and reandeaux at Miami International Airport.  And, for most of these bodybuilders, the two-day, 15,000 mile trip will an experience of a lifetime.  Says Murthy, "To be able to compete in Hollywood and now Miami is a dream that most of us Indian bodybuilders will never realize.  I am most blessed and thankful for this wonderful opportunity and wish to represent my country with honor."

Beckham's Challenge
At the recent Musclemania Atlantic, Jeff Beckham took the stage and challenged fellow MM Pro's Morris Mendez and Hugh Ross to a posedown - "any time, any place"!  The six foot, 240 lbs. New Yorker lost to the veteran Ross at last year's MM World in Hollywood and has sworn never to loose again.  The contest was Ross' first as a MM Pro following his win at the '05 MM Atlantic.  Mendez hasn't competed since the '05 MM World on the heals of his big win at the '05 MM Superbody in Miami.  Although he claims he will be bigger than ever at the upcoming MM Universe in Miami (he's promising a lean 230 lbs.), Beckham still won't be able to face Mendez and Ross since both have chosen to wait it out.   As
Mendez has said, "I'll compete when I am ready - not because I'm being challenged."  So, Beckham will be forced to take on a bevy of other great MM Pros at MM Universe including Jermaine Morgan, the newest to the MM Pro ranks.  The 20 year old sensation, is humble but intent on beating Beckham and despite a 40 lbs. weight difference he promises to conquer him on symmetry and condition.  More about MM Pros training for MM Universe next week.

Newest, Youngest MM Pro -
-
He's competed at Musclemania Atlantic for the past three years and won the Junior Division last year. But, last weekend, Jermaine Morgan surprised everyone with a physique that was beyond his 20 years. At 5'7", 185 lbs., the Connecticut bodybuilder won his weight class and overall title beating seasoned natural bodybuilders including regional favorites like Bennett Streets and Domino Tanco. Jermaine said he gained 10 lbs. of muscle from last year which he attributed to lucky circumstances. "I was laid off from my job, so for the past 5 months all I've been doing is train twice a day, eat seven meals and lots of sleep. And, dam it worked big time!" On Sunday, the day after the show, Jermaine was
already back in the gym. "I am so pumped to take on the Pros. I am just 20, so to go up against the big boys like Beckham and Mendez is such a rush. I am going to train like an animal and compete at Superbody in New York and then the World's. I will bring to the stage a whole new body. I got to. I'm making bodybuilding my life."

Physical Perpetration
When Lazo Freeman first competed at Musclemania Universe in Miami, you would think that the guy had been hitting weights for years.  But the 27 years old chemical engineer got started because of a magazine advertisement.  "Actually, I've been training for almost four years.  I had the Superman/Clark Kent syndrome, or the ugly duck fable.  Back in 2004, I was a fat unhealthy geek, studying chemical engineering at London's top university UCL. Sick and tired of how I looked, I wanted to look like the guys in Musclemania, really.  So, I entered and won the EAS Body For Life Challenge Transformation.  I took up bodybuilding and personal training seriously to help others achieve their fitness goals, too, and eventually compete and won a few UK shows.  So, after developing the kind of body I was finally proud of, I decided it was time to take it stateside (USA) and entered my first Musclemania show as a Novice Heavyweight.  What a dream come true!  The perpetration, overcoming the trail and tribulation and mental challenge before the show, then flying over to Miami, meeting all the other awesome competitors, making friends and then actually wining my division.  I had a fantastic time!  My next step is to become a MM Pro at the MM World in Hollywood in November.  I will be putting on size to compete at 220 pounds. But in the mean time, I have registered my own charity to raise money for treatment for disfigured kids, the "Charity for the Impaired".  It feels like I have been given so much as a British Iraqi and its time for me to contribute back."  Lazo has made a life changing physical transition, academic progression and, now, public service.  And, no doubt, there will be more ambitions and achievements in his athletic, professional and personal life.

Stark Contradictions
Like most bodybuilding competitions, you always see a variety of good talent but only a couple outstanding bodies that causes the audience to gasp.  At last year's Musclemania New York, there was such a bodybuilder who's humble demeanor was in stark contradiction to his enormous and balanced physique.  Mackenzi Philippeaux had trained in Haiti for all of his 32 years and was in Brooklyn, New York, visiting relatives when he saw an advertisement for the show.  "I said to myself, 'It's time to get your ass into shape'", said Mackenzi.  The 5'5", 165 lbs., trainer has been training since he was 16 years old as an outlet to the incredible poverty in which he lived.  He explains, "My family lives on $150 per month.  Can you
image being a bodybuilder with that kind petty money?  Everyday I train at the Gold's Gym in Port-au-Prince and then personal train government officials and VIP's.  I feel I am a lucky person when I see so many poor people in my country."  Under the dire conditions in which he lives and trains, Mackenzi meets the challenge every day.  "I want to become a great bodybuilder with the respect that my family and I can be proud."  Mackenzi is currently training for Musclemania Universe in Miami and thanks to a Haitian American singer is now sponsored to train for the past few months in the US.  "It's been a blessing and I have made good use of my time here," Mackenzi exclaimed.  "I will be completely new bodybuilder at the Universe!"  And, there is certainly no doubt that Mackenzi with have the audience gasping again.

Mentally & Physically Driven -
-
When MM Pro Tommy Alston hit the MM World stage last November, he was undoubtedly in the best shape of his life.  Bigger, more symmetrical and conditioned.  The man was on his game, but placing third behind Ricardo Plata and High Ross was not.  Tommy had layed low for a year, developed more mass, especially in his arms, and really had the best physique of his life.  On any other day, he could have won the show.  Yes, the guy left California disappointed and rightly so.  But since then, he hasn't lost his zeal to make an even better appearance the next time he takes the stage.  Tommy explains it best.  "After placing third, I decided to give my body a much needed rest. For the first time in
seventeen years I took off a full two months from training.  But, I started off back slow in the beginning of February and it has been balls to the wall since then.  I've been training each body part once a week for two weeks then twice on the third week to shock the muscles.  So far it's been working - I'm growing like a weed. Right now I'm using a lot of compound movements like pull ups, rows, bench presses, and squats to pack on as much muscle as possible.  I use 3 different exercises for 3 to 4 work sets for smaller muscle groups.  For larger muscles such as chest and back, I pick 4 to 5 exercises for 3 to 4 work sets each.  My reps are in the 6 to 15 range for now but I like to change that up periodically.  I'm currently contemplating on whether I'm going to compete in the Universe in Miami and/or the Superbody in New York later this year.   Whatever I decide, once again I will come in better than ever."  And, judging upon the changes Tommy made between his last two shows, expect to witness a metamorphosis of one of the sports hardest working natural bodybuilders.  He's mentally and physically driven to claim victory this season!

Wrestling's Newest Phenom
From the madness of the gym to the demands of the ring, massive MM Heavyweight Champion Rob Terry (photo, second right) continues to tear up his competition while training with the WWE in Georgia.  The 6'4", 280 lbs. behemoth has amazed bodybuilding audiences since he first competed at 17 years of age and all the while remaining drug-free.  His commitment to natural bodybuilding has helped Rob create an incredibly athletic yet massively developed physique and in condition all year long.  He hopes to move from WWE's training league to their top tier, televised show line-up.  Move over John Cena, because a new creation will soon storm the ring!  More news about Big Rob as he reports it.

Hula Skirt Upset
They had never met before the '07 Musclemania Universe, but it would prove to be a hotly contested event between two great juniors.  Alvin Viernes of Hawaii and Larry Camacho of California are two of the newest and most impressive natural junior bodybuilders competing.  Alvin has won every Hawaiian teenage competition and Larry surprised everyone at the' 06 MM Junior World.  Then, they met again last year in Miami and the sparks were flying.  The taller, bigger and more conditioned Larry easily beat Alvin in Prejudging but lost to him in the Posing Round and overall title.  "What's with that stupid hula skirt!," a very unhappy Larry shouted coming off stage referring to Alvin's Polynesian themed costume.  He was obviously upset.  But with 25% of the Musclemania score based upon posing, the judges were impressed enough with Alvin's routine to give him the show.  So, in part because of upsets like that between Alvin and Larry and comments and suggestions from other Musclemania bodybuilders, the rules are changing.  Beginning this season, the posing routine in the Finals will be worth just 10%.  Yes, posing and presentation matters but it won't carry as much weight as Symmetry, Size and Condition, each now worth 30%.  As for Alvin and Larry, time will tell if they will have a re-match under the new rules.

On the War Path
One of Iraq's most prominent bodybuilders was preparing for Musclemania Universe when he was injured in a car bomb last month. Firas Gerges owns a local Baghdad gym and was making the 10 minute walk on a path from his home to work when the explosion occurred causing extensive physical damage and sending 28 people to the hospital. Firas was hit by glass and metal fragments in his chest, shoulder and legs and is now recovering at home.  "It would have been my first competition outside of Iraq," Firas said referring to his plans to compete in Miami.  The 27 year old former Mr. Iraq is married with two children started training as a teenager with his
uncles.  And, since the war, he has struggled to maintain his regimen and keep his passion for bodybuilding alive.  Firas exhasperated, "One of the most difficult parts of the war is its unpredictability.  Forget bodybuilding nutrition!  Not knowing day to day when and where I can get the food and water I need to feed my family is hard enough."  At 5'10", 205 lbs., Firas has classic shape and size when in condition.  "Good willing, I will be back to training soon and be able to care for my family.  Baghdad will be a great place to live and train again."

Big & Biggest -

Two of the best natural Musclemania bodybuilders on the world stage are Shoaib Zahoor of Pakistan and Rob Terry of Wales.  With a height difference of nearly a foot, both athletes have a long, popular and respected competitive careers.  Most recently, Shoaib won the '06 MM Britain MW Class and is preparing for MM Universe in Miami.  Rob dominated the '06 MM World HW Class at Universal Studios in Hollywood.  Shoaib has been training for over 20 years and owns a popular Lahore fitness center while Rob has competed since 17 years of age and won every British junior division competition entered.  At 5'6", 180 lbs., Shoaib explains that he has most recently been training for symmetry.  "Like
most Pakistani bodybuilders, I have a great upper body, but neglected by hamstrings and calves for many years.  Since competing in Musclemania, I have focused on making my symmetry most important."  But, Rob have always had great shape but wanted (and needed) more mass.  "I'm 6'4", so my priority was always filling out my physique," he stated.  Well, at 285 lbs, size does not seem to be much of a problem for Rob any longer. Following his big win at the '06 MM World, he was approached by WWE scouts who were in the audience.  Now the 27 year old Welsh bank officer is learning the ropes and part of WWE's Florida Championship Wrestling.  He is joined by Rycklon Stephens, also a Musclemania HW who joined the WWE last year.

Gladiator Muscle
Well he hasn't competed since 1999, but American Gladiator Alex Castro, has struck gold as "Militia" on the new NBC television show.  He's competed only once at the Musclemania Superbody and was a Top 5 Finalist in the Heavyweight Class.  But, as the 6'2", 240 lbs. athlete put it, "I enjoy eating too much to go through that diet again."  Alex continued, "Bodybuilding is very popular in Cuba.  I started lifting when I was just 14 years old and by the time I came to the US, I weighed 250 lbs. and was in good condition."  The former Musclemania bodybuilder immigrated from Cuba ten years ago and was hired as a bartender and bar dancer at popular Mango's Tropical Cafe in South Beach,
Florida. On the first edition of American Gladiator, Alex was injured but should be back soon for the weekly Monday night show.

Czech Out the Champ!
He started training at 15 years old and just 18 months later Juri Borkovec won the '05 Czech National Junior Championships.  Then, two years later, the 5'10", 190 lbs. natural bodybuilder came to America and won the '07 Musclemania Superbody in Miami.  "It was my first time competing in America, so I really trained harder than ever for the contest.  I did not know what to expect, but I wanted to win," said Juri.  And, win big time he did!  At 21 years of age, Juri was in top condition for the show and swept Junior HW Division competitors like Brandon Bass (Texas) and stomped LW Division winner Alvin Viernes (Hawaii).  Bodybuilding is just one of many other athletic pastimes for Juri which also include
volleyball, soccer, martial arts and ice hockey.  Juri explains, "I was always athletic, but when I was 13, my father took me to the gym for the first time.  I always remember seeing photos of Arnold and saying to myself, 'I want to be a bodybuilder someday'."  Juri was a big hit in Miami and had the media chasing him all weekend.  Next on his itinerary, "I want to win Musclemania World."

Hail to Habideen
It was his first time competing at a Musclemania show, so Illinois natural bodybuilder Habideen Olaniran did not know what to expect.   But by night's end, the 20 year old college student had won his class and the overall title! At 5'9", 182 lbs., Habideen has been training for just 3 years but has consistently increased his lean muscle mass by 15 lbs. every year. In the off-season, he maintains a lean diet but admits a lot of his gains are luck. "I really eat junk in the off-season because I can't afford the usual bodybuilder's diet - you know, eggs, chicken breast, tuna and stuff. Burger King keeps me full and its cheap," admits Habideen.  "As much as possible, I take protein shakes, creatine and other supplements. But closer to a show I just
rely on protein bars."   At the recent Musclemania World in Hollywood, he made his national level debut and although Habideen's Burger King diet didn't reap first place honors, this amazing college student made a big impact.  He said, "I know what I need to do now and next year I will bring something special to the stage."

Tatoo Muscles
When you look at the arms of Angelo Rossi you realize that this guy's really in love with competing.  For that past two years, this Italian Musclemania fanatic has literally tatoo each Musclemania competition he has competed on a different part of his arms including Musclemania Universe, Italy, World and Las Vegas.  Angelo is fanatical about Musclemania shows and says, "These shows are like nothing else we have in Europe.  I feel like a king when I compete at Musclemania!"  The 27 year old personal trainer speaks no English but when he competes in the US, Angelo is expressive with his energy, excitement and enthusiasm for the sport of natural bodybuilding . . . and, of course, all
over his body.  He is now preparing for Musclemania Italy in June, 2008, and making room for one more tatoo.

Numero Uno
He trains among humble surroundings and has made incredible financial and personally sacrifices to become the world's best natural bodybuilder.  Columbia's Ricardo Plata (photo left with '06 MM Champ Nick Jones) has been weight training since a teenager but the 35 year old lifetime natural bodybuilder has only been competing in the past 10 years.  "I started competing in some NABBA, IFBB and WABBA, shows but they wasn't the kind of shows I liked.  I won my weight class at the Columbian and South American Championships, but when I learned that Musclemania was for drug free bodybuilders, I knew it was for me," said Ricardo.   The 5'7", 190 lbs. personal training is a local legend and has a bevy of
sponsors which not only provide all of the food and supplements Ricardo used throughout the year but also his travel expenses to Musclemania shows in Miami and Hollywood.  He explained after winning the MM Pro title, "I am blessed to have so many good friends and business in my country who have believed in me and helped make this day come true."  Ricardo clearly won the Prelims (worth 75% of the overall score) and was in the Top 4 in the Finals (worth 25%).  His muscle density and condition, vascularity and symmetry was on target and a combination that was tough to beat.  "Now, I need to get back to my training and prepare for next season," said Ricardo.  "I used to train inspired to beat veterans likes Whittaker, Ulisses and Mendez.  Now I'm number one and everyone is going to be after me.   What a feeling!"

Professional Package
With a nearly fresh line-up of MM Pros, it was anyone's show to win.  While goliath David Whittaker focused on family matters and Marine Corps Sgt. Phillip Ricardo attended to his military obligations, a whole new crew of natural bodybuilders filled the ranks in Hollywood.  It included New York phenom and personal trainer Tommy Alston Jr. (center) who added impressive muscle mass especially major arm growth.  There was Brooklyn's Hugh Ross (second right) who qualified four years ago but stepped on the MM Pro stage for the first time.  The 40+ year old bodybuilding veteran and corrections officer has the kind of seasoned muscle size and condition that only comes with natural muscle maturity.  And newcomer Cleveland Thomas (left) who brought a panther kind of classic shape and condition which won him the MM Superbody MW Class.  And, then there was the sleeping Latin killer, Ricardo Plata (right) who trains in a Columbian village gym with home made equipment from tree limbs and cast iron weights. At 6'1", Queens, New York, Jeff Beckham was the tallest on stage and carried an imposing 230 lbs. physique with his characteristic dominance.  Nippon muscleman Nario Miyano was celebrating his 10th anniversary appearance as a MM Pro and posing to be a Top 5 Finalist.  And, California pastor Bobby Wagner delivered an almost unassuming physique that came to life with every pose and would upset the assumed favorites.

The results were surprising but the well deserved victory going to Ricardo Plata, the Latin American natural star who carried incredible muscle mass and definition better than any of his prior competition appearances.  An amazing Hugh Ross came in Second Place while fellow New Yorker Tommy Alston Jr., who really looked amazing, left Hollywood feeling burned with a Third Place finish.  Musclemania's resident preacher Bobby Wagner surprised everyone with an inaugural appearance in 4th Place.  And, Jeff Beckham wrapped up the Top 5 with a big physique but not as conditioned as at his MM Superbody and MM Atlantic wins.  Unfortunately, following the show, 7th Place Finalist Cleveland Thomas sent his wife backstage to chastised the promoter, throwing his trophy while unleashing a rant in front of other competitors how her husband had been subjected to incompetant judging and would never compete in a Musclemania show again.  Well, it wouldn't be a lively competition without a pissed off spouse once in a while.

California Legend Takes LW Class
For nearly 20 years, California bodybuilder Danny Hester has been competing in Musclemania and NPC shows and is always a class favorite.  And at the recent Musclemania World, he returned to the stage weighing 161 lbs. and thanks to his dense, mature muscle development and small bone structure, he had the appearance of a bodybuilder 25 lbs. heavier.  The 38 year old fitness equipment designer was a state ranked high school wrestler and began bodybuilding on a whim when he was just 19.  His three brothers were all jocks, too, so staying athletic after high school, through college and beyond was a big influence on Danny.  He won virtually every bodybuilding show he entered for many years and is still respected as one
of the sports best natural physique.  And, his near perfect score in the Musclemania Open LW Class is validation that with Danny's age, so improves his amazingly symmetrical physique.

Too Good to Lose
Probably among the most competitive and talent driven category at Musclemania World as the Open LHW Class.  It featured junior phenom  Bradly Castleberry (center) who at just 22 years of age barely made the class and weighed as much as 225 lbs. just 4 weeks earlier.  Just behind him was MM Philippines Champion Rey Pancho (right) who at 40 years of age carries the kind of muscle size, condition and symmetry of a much younger bodybuilder.  Rey is a national hero for his many years in winning bodybuilding titles.  For many years, he ran his own gym and lived the bodybuilding lifestyle at home and work.  The 5'11", 198 lbs. husband and father is mentor to younger Filipino bodybuilders and his own family.  An impressive new face and body at Musclemania World was Sanjeev Narayan (left) who although lost his conditioning after a long 17 hour flight from New Zealand, probably had the most impressive size and symmetry in the whole show.  Some in the audience were saying that if he had been tighter, Sanjeev would have easily won.  At 5'9", 190 lbs., he added over 15 lbs. of muscle since loosing the '06 MM Australia in Melbourne, so given his condition is spot on, he will be a favorite for next year's MM Universe in Miami.

Not Getting Me Down
"I trained so hard for this show and then this?  I am so disappointed."  That was Marie Brandon's response after learning that she would be the only Women's Division competitor at Musclemania World.  But, she took it like the veteran she is and presented herself in classic fashion for the audience.  "I wasn't going to let it get me down," she said after posing.  The 5'5", 128 fitness professional soon learned that nearly all of the female competitors at the annual Hollywood based show appear in the Ms. Bikini, Fitness, Model and newly added Figure Divisions. Actually, over 250 ladies competed in the other categories.  But Marie was an impressive bodybuilder nonetheless with great muscle development, symmetry and condition.  This lady was
ready for any number of competitors.  Back in her native Rockford, Illinois, she home schooled all of her 5 children for 20 years.  And, Marie has an extensive athletic background including both a professional ballerina and hip hop dance choreography for 15 years.  For over 20 years, she has been a competitive runner, duathlonger and triathoner while participating in recreational kick boxing, aerobics and Pilate's.  But currently, her passion is competitive bodybuilding with many titles racked up including the Southern California Open, Masters and Figure Divisions.  Marie may have competed against only herself at Musclemania World but she has conquered all of the challenges faced in her life and, as she puts it, "I am a motivator for all around me to live a better, healthier and fuller life."

Viva Las Vegas
The first ever Musclemania Las Vegas show was held recently and featured some of the desert kingdom's best natural bodybuilders.  Staged at University of Nevada Las Vegas, ironically the winner was the school's Fitness Director who had not competed for 4 years.  At 6'3", 220 lbs., Jay Souza is an impressive competitor and who easily took the title but says he doesn't plan on competing again for a year or two.  "My wife and I would like to have some kids, so that will take me out of the scene for a while," said Jay.  "But when I do come back, it will be straight to the Musclemania World.  That's my next step."  Prior to the competition, some of the fitness, bikini, model and bodybuilding participants appeared at the Media Session which took
place on the Las Vegas strip.  It attracted so much attention that MGM Casino security were in force for crowd control.  And, because of the popularity of the show, next year Musclemania Las Vegas will be held pool side at one of the casino resorts as an afternoon event.

Caribbean Powerhouse
When he stripped down to weigh-in at Musclemania New York, all heads turned in amazement.  Here was this 5'4", 170 lbs. freak who no one had ever seen on the natural muscle scene and gives a whole new description to the word "massive".  But in his native Haiti, Mackenzi Philippeaux is legendary having won all of the country's national titles.  On vacation in New York, he decided to jump into MM New York after prodding by one of his friends without a diet or even depleting his water.  "While I am here, I wanted to compete as much as possible and when I learn that Musclemania was in town, I couldn't pass up the show.  Back home in Haiti, I see the show on ESPN all the time.  So, I was pretty excited," explained Mackenzi.  He went on
to win the MW Class and if had been in better condition may have won the overall title.  Mackenzi will be returning to Haiti when his US visa expires in December but will return next season to compete at Musclemania Atlantic, the Kumite and Superbody in Miami.  He claims, "I want to improve my calves and hamstrings, add as much muscle as possible and then win all of the Musclemania shows."

New York Super Stars
The recent Musclemania New York show had some of the regionals best natural stars but attracting most of the attention throughout the day were Musclemania Pros Tommy Alston (left), Hugh Ross (center) and Morris Mendez (right).  Tommy was looking huge, easily 10 lbs. bigger than his last competition at '06 MM Superbody.  "I've just been training and growing.  But, it's my symmetry on which I've been working," he said.  Tommy is ready and will be competing at the upcoming Musclemania World in Hollywood.  He claims, "I am ready to take on any of the big boys - Mendez, Beckham, whoever - bring them on!  You're going to see a complete Tommy Alston in Hollywood."  As usual, Hugh was impressive in New York but hasn't been seen on stage since last year's Musclemania Atlantic charity show.  But he has never competed at either the MM World or Superbody.  Morris was dressed in one of his fashionably tailored suits.  This year, he has been traveling the Musclemania World Tour making appearances including Mexico, Superbody and Canada.  But, Morris hasn't announced when to expect him back on stage.  He said, "Yeah, you'll see soon."

Real Estate Muscleman
You saw him at the 2005 & 2006 Musclemania Canada and 2005 World, but with all the hype and ballyhoo about this new bodybuilder, he never even won his weight class.  Matt Tsinkorang probably has some of the best genetics and natural muscle development seen in years.  But, in every show he competed, he was never ever able to get into contest condition.  "I was holding water, too much and I did not know why," said the former Canadian high school football player.  But his life and body have changed dramatically since last year.  Matt explained, "I started a real estate investment company and it is paying off better than I ever dreamed in the first year.  Before, I was missing that financial security, but now I have the resources I need to eat
right and train without a lot of the stresses of life."  Plus, Matt was signed on to promote NxLabs, a new sports nutrition brand which provides him the supplementation needed to develop a world class, natural bodybuilding physique.  At 5'6", Matt is keeping his off-season condition around 200 lbs. and not blowing up to 240 like in past off-seasons.  "Now, I am keeping my body in good shape all year round and it is making a major difference in my muscle quality.  Maybe next year you will see me on the Musclemania stage again, but this time big and in shape," claims Matt.

Nuclear Bodybuilding
One of the newest Musclemania stars is upstate New York's Matt Franco , a 23 year old natural bodybuilder who says bodybuilding was a sport meant to be for him.  The Musclemania Saratoga Champion says, "Growing up with parents who promoted a healthy lifestyle and being fit has made the dedication to the sport of bodybuilding easy for me."  The 5'7", 165 lbs. runs his own personal training company, but his full time job is as a nuclear medicine technologist.  Matt says, "Having two very demanding jobs has posed challenges with finding time for bodybuilding, but in the end, we all find time to pursue what we love to do.  I love forward to more Musclemania events and earning
Pro status in the organization."  Musclemania Saratoga photos are posted in the Gallery .

China Bodies
The 3rd Annual Musclemania China was held recently and feature an amazing line-up of China's best natural physiques.  The winner was Ge Shenjian (photo, second from right), a gym owner from Harbin in Heilongjiang Province, who mixed a perfect blend of symmetry, size, condition and presentation.  The show also featured Fitness and Model China competitions and hosted a plethora of China's celebrities, local and national media and government officials.  Highlight coverage was featured on the local Zhengzhou and national CCTV television stations.  It was a very exciting night and the sold-out audience of nearly 2,000 whom stayed for nearly an hour after to show to shoot photos, get autographs and meet their favorite competitors.  To disperse the crowd, the theater staff had to shut off the lights!  The enthusiasm was unlike anything seen at any other bodybuilding competition in the country.  Consider even the IFBB organization in China, which for many years had a virtual strong hold on Chinese bodybuilding, ordered their provincial officials to issue written threatens of expulsions to any bodybuilder who competed at Musclemania China.  But it did not matter as the very best in Chinese bodybuilding came anyway to be seen, discovered, earn the $7,500 cash purse and a trip to compete at Musclemania World in Hollywood.  Musclemania China continues to grow and next year will be moved to an even larger theater and expanded to a 2-day event and fitness exhibition.  Many more photos will soon be posted in the Gallery.

Lean, Mean and Ready
One of Canada's hottest new bodybuilders really isn't so new. At 37 years of age, Kane Sumabat has always had an incredibly developed physique. At 5'10", 185 lbs., he maintains a very lean musculature with just 5% body fat year-round but has never competed. Well, that's about to change at Musclemania Canada when Kane straps on his first set of posing trunks and shows what 25 years of weight training can do for a body. The Toronto personal trainer regularly does one arm pull-ups with ease, walking hand stands and a variety of other calisthenics and acrobatic moves. But, since his teen years, Kane's athletic forte has been martial arts which he claims to keep him limber and loose and his muscles lean and tone.  We will see Kane ready to
apply his unique and multi talented and athletically skilled physique on stage on October 27.

It seems to get bigger and better with each season and the recent Fitness South Africa was a spectacular!   Held at the famous Grand West Casino near in Cape Town, promoter Bernedette Beyer worked hard to promote a totally sold out, 900 seat show all to watch an impressive 120 strong athlete line-up!   Many of the fitness, bikini and model competitors will be participating at the Musclemania World and Model America in Hollywood in November.  Next season, more events will be held on the continent including Musclemania & Model Africa show in Nigeria and the Sahara show in Egypt.

Mountain High Training
In his Musclemania Pro debut, Columbian muscle man *Ricardo Plata* surprised everyone by grabbing 2nd Place at the Superbody Championships in Miami.  Amazingly, for the past 15 years, the 5'6", 190 lbs. store clerk has lived in a small mountain town and trained in his own home
gym.  But, as Ricardo says, "Living away from the big gyms allows me to be creative with my training without the influence of other guys in the gym.  I have learned what work's best for my body by trail and error."
But according to him, food is what really makes a difference living away from the city.  "I grow most of my own vegetables and meat - well, it's simply the best.  My chicken, beef and turkey are all day fresh
from the local butcher.  I just wouldn't get that living in Bogota.  And, I truly believe that good, fresh food is a major reason why I an able to train so hard and develop my body relentlessly," said Ricardo.  Hot off his runner-up slot, he's now is training for Musclemania World in Hollywood.

Missing the Mark
For the past 6 years, Malaysia's Syed Fazli has improved his physique and progressed through the Musclemania ranks to become one of the world's most impressive natural professionals.  The 32 year old personal trainer recently competed at MM Superbody in Miami which was disappointed for him.  First time MM Pros Jeff Beckham (1st, USA), Ricardo Plata (2nd, Columbia) and Lajos Konya (3rd, Hungary) forced Syed into 4th Place. "I trained for 2 years and wanted to come home as a Top 3 Finalist," Syed said.  "I was 10 lbs. heavier and with my best symmetry ever, so perhaps it was my condition which lost it for me."  At 200 lbs. on stage, Syed has easily become Asia's most symmetrical, classic bodybuilders.
But Syed isn't certain what's next.  "Right now, I think I will lay low and just train.  It's disappointing to train so hard, so long and then miss your goal."

Amigos Latinos Fisicos
The growing interest of Musclemania World Tour throughout Latin America is creating a lot of friendships among drug free bodybuilders.  At the recent Musclemania Superbody in Miami, bodybuilders like MM Pro Ricardo Plata (Columbia), Larry Camacho (Nicaragua) [photo, left], Victor Montoya [photo, right] and Johnny Vasquez (Honduras), Jorge Taralas, Ricardo Flores  and Leopaldo Flores (Mexico) and many others were able to meet for the first time. Their training facilities may be rudimentary, nutrition based more on food than supplements and simple lifestyles compared to bodybuilders in the USA and Canada, but the combination seems to be winning titles.  Larry Camacho is a US citizen who has lived in California for many years but was raised for much of life in Nicaragua.  "The facilities in Central America are pretty basic and its tough to get the kind of supplements we have here," said Larry.  "But, it only makes your ambition more intense."  Victor Montoya won the '06 MM Central America but hadn't competed for 5 years.  He said, "Being a bodybuilding down here is tough, really tough.  I've been training for ten years and the food gets more expensive, the supplements are hard to find and costs a lot of money and nobody cares about the sport.  So to be able to compete at the MM Central America show and the Superbody and World's really keeps me motivated.  But it also gives me a chance to meet other natural bodybuilders from around the world."  And, with new Musclemania shows in Mexico, El Salvador, Argentina, Costa Rica, Chile, Brazil and other Latin America countries, more new and undiscovered bodybuilders are rising to the international scene. Camacho, Montoya and many other Latin American bodybuilders will be competing at MM World in November.

Beating Big Boys
Since his first competition in 2004, heavyweight junior sensation Bradly Castleberry rose to become both the '06 MM World and MM Superbody Junior Champions.  But, still just 21 years of age, he figured, "Why should I keep competing against guys I'm beating."  So, once he weighed-in and apparently feeling his oats, Bradly moved up and into the Open Men's Division at the MM Superbody.  Then, he had to deal with the wrath of a whole new breed of natural muscle men including an equally developed but incredibly defined David Lovelace .  Like Castleberry, the 29 year old, 5'10", 190 lbs. personal trainer is a seasoned bodybuilder who is just off his win at the Musclemania Atlantic.  These two incredible bodybuilders made it tough for the judges finishing with just a half a point difference from each other.  Some say that if Castleberry had come in the show with bit more definition, he would have swept the LHW Class while others confess that if Lovelace had held on to just 5 lbs. of the muscle mass he lost in the final week of dieting, he would have crushed anyone, including HW Class and MM World Champion Kevin Gribben.  In the past two years, Castleberry has been competing as a heavyweight weighing at least 205 lbs.  So, it was the first time since 2004 in which he hovered below 200 lbs.  Said Lovelace, "I'm ignited now and ready to take down some Pros.  I want to add 10 lbs. by the MM World's in November . . . and it won't be hard to do."  As for Castleberry, "I'm happy with my performance and knowing that I barely lost in my first open competition, I look forward to winning at the World's.  I need to compete over 200 - it's where I look my best."  So, its on to Hollywood.

First Time Victors
It may have been their first Musclemania Superbody Championships, but in all categories it was the first timers who claimed top honors.  In the Professional Division, Jeff Beckham (center) stormed his opponents and captured all first place votes.  The 6'1", 225 lbs., personal trainer was fresh off his Musclemania Atlantic win which was his first MM competition.  Second was Ricardo Plata , also a new MM Pro from Columbia who carried a powerfully packed 5'6", 180 lbs. physique.  In the Men's Open Division, Long Island, NY native Kevin Gribben (left) dominated the HW Class.  The 6'2", 230 lbs., high school physical education teacher was competing in his very first bodybuilding competition after being encouraged by his older brother Matt.  In the Junior Division, the Top 3 tall class finalists were all first time Musclemania bodybuilders.  Jiri Borkovec (right) is the Czech National Champion and wooed the judges with his muscle density and symmetry.  The 6', 190 lbs. college student was competing in America for the first time.  The Runner-Up was Mateus Correia , a 22 year old medical student from Sao Paulo, Brazil, and the Junior National Champion.  The Third Place finalist was Johan Karouani from Paris who is the French National Junior Champion.  The 6', 225 lbs. giant had immense size and proportions but could not match the muscle quality and shape of Jiri.  With over 400 participants competed at the Universe Weekend and the Musclemania Superbody capped off an exciting weekend of fitness, model, bikini and muscle action.  Complete results and gallery are posted for viewing.

No One Can Touch Me!
He may be just 5'6" and weighs 160 lbs., but the ferocity of this kid's amazing. Houston lifter Chris Darby is an academic, athlete and entrepreneur.  He started competing at the 2005 Musclemania Texas and didn't know what he was doing.  He symmetry was non-existent, conditioning looked like he was on a Twinky diet and posed to Superman theme, cap, mask and all.  Well, he heard the criticism and in one year turned himself around 180 degrees!  The 20 year old University of Houston student trained for symmetry and not just size, kept a monitored diet all year and presented a whole new routine at the 2006 Musclemania Texas . . . and won!  He caught the eye of various sponsors and is
now moving forward with his training.  "One month out, I am currently prepping for Musclemania Superbody in Miami , June 22-24.  With all my hard work and dedication I put in, I plan to give nothing but the best to the audience ," explained Chris.  But regular weight training and sticking to a competition diet isn't all he's doing.  " I am also now attending yoga and Pilates classes to increase my flexibility for my posing routines," Chris admitted.  Competing against the best natural junior bodybuilders in the world will be a tall order for any bodybuilder.  But, Chris is physically and mentally ready.  " I will be hard to beat, but also know I will still be competing against great Musclemania
athletes ."

The Delta King
He first competed at the 2003 Musclemania Delta and easily won the Junior Division.  At 6'2", 200 lbs., Carey Addison was more than imposing at the New Orleans area show.  But with that like his high school football, basketball and baseball achievements, the 20 year old had the discipline to train his body for shape and composition.   Kerry explains that, "Lifting for bodybuilding is a lot different than for active sports.  The weights, intensity, regimen and especially the diet was really new for me."  But after winning the 2005 MM Delta Open Mens HW Class, Kerry hasn't been seen on stage again.  "After I have finished school, it took a while to get settled into the right job.  Plus, with the
affects of Katrina in the area, things were economically pretty tough for a while," Kerry said.  "I am doing really well but had to start over this year.  Now I am where I would like to be.  I am holding around 260 to 265 lbs., and getting leaner each week.  I don't have any set plans yet because I am trying to gain a little more weight. And I am making sure it is all going to be good weight. I will be shooting for something at the end of the year, and hopefully I wont look back.  I have the time, so once I get in shape I will do my best to stay in shape."  So stand by for the return of The Delta King!

My Move to Hollywood
Weighing in over 250 lbs., he's bigger than any other Musclemania Pro and at 6'4", he dominated the '06 MM World Heavyweight Class.  Rob Terry has been training since he was 15 years of age and was winning every major junior level bodybuilding competition in his native Wales, England and around Europe.  But it wasn't until he started competing at Musclemania in America that people really took notice of this amazing muscle man.  "I always enjoy training and competing, but the UK shows were too easy.  By the time I was 17 years old, I was beating all the junior guys," Rob said recently.  Now, following his big win at the Musclemania World, the 26 year old bank officer is following his dreams and
pursuing an acting career in Hollywood.  Rob explains, "Since winning the show in Hollywood, I have been approached by a lot of people to audition for many commercials and some movie parts.  Even the WWE has approached me.  Its a big move, but I am planning on trying my luck in Hollywood.  I am young enough that if nothing happens, I can always continue with my banking career.  But at least I know I lived my dreams."

In Shape and Ready
Like President Bush, he's hellbent and on a war path.  But like a seasoned diplomat, MM Pro Jason Powell is also calculating in his approach to win the Musclemania Superbody Pro.  "I have layed low for a couple of years to get my diet down and plan my strategy, but I am now so far ahead of my game plan - in shape, symmetrical and ready to take on anyone!," Jason said.  He will be competing weighing over 220 lbs., that's 30 lbs. more than in 2005.  The 28 year old personal trainer is the #1 natural bodybuilder in the State of Texas.   But Jason was always skilled and athletic, a high school jock and seasoned US Air Force commando.  He explained, "Sports and training have always been in my psyche
and physical fitness and physical fitness in my blood."   And, we will see how much of that  blood will be spilled in trying to win in Miami.

New England Bash!
The recent 8th Annual Musclemania Atlantic was a spectacular event in all aspects - a sold-out audience, tons of awesome bodybuilders, high spirits and lots of camaraderie!  But, most of all from the Junior to the Open Men's Divisions, the quality of the competition was the highest in the history of this great regional event.  In the Junior Division, Jermain Morgan took the class with a physique which had the same body weight as last year, but his 172 lbs. appeared monstrously bigger and like 200 lbs.!  The 19 year old phenom is looking for a sponsor to take his wonderboy body to Musclemania Superbody in Miami.  In the Open Men's MW Class, Ben Serrano might as well stood alone on stage.  New to Musclemania, his balanced and big physique has been groomed with plenty of amateur and professional experience in the New York and New England region.  And, in the Open Men's HW Class, an incredible Jeff Beckham of Brooklyn, New York, stoled the whole show.  At 6', 210 lbs., he was a combination of mass, shape and mind blogling definition.  Whether posed or standing relaxed, Jeff had that special "something" which makes the difference between being just a winner and a future star.  Now as the newest MM Pro, he is weighing his options whether to compete in Miami or wait until Musclemania World in Hollywood to make his debut among the best professional bodybuilders in natural bodybuilding.

Maximize My Body
There he stood, back stage at Musclemania Atlantic - big, symmetrical, ripped and a bit aloof to the hustle and bustle around him.  You could hear the other guys muttering, "Who's is that guy?"  But, soon, there would be no doubt that this "guy" was going to win anything he wanted at the show.  Jeff Beckham may have won a lot of local New York City natural shows, but had never stepped foot on a Musclemania stage.  This would be his first and he wanted to be ready.  "I had won a bunch of shows and really knew that this would be the top of my amateur career," he said after winning the Men's HW and overall title at the show.  Jeff is a 24 year old personal trainer from Brooklyn,
New York, who trains at  a local Bally's, eats whatever he can afford and trains instinctively without the assistance of a more experienced bodybuilder.  "I do it all on my own," he asserted. "I train to feel the muscle - no special routines - just (according to) how my muscles feel.   I am lucky because it has worked great for me.  But I really need help with my dieting.  For this show I was weighing 245 lbs., cut down to 210 and probably should have stopped at 220.  I looked my best there."  But even at 210 lbs., the six footer was striking, dominant and surely has a incredible career lying ahead for himself.  Jeff explained, "I competed in some NPC shows and did O.K., but that stuff wasn't for me.  Then, I went on to win a bunch of local natural shows - NGA and INBF - but I knew I had to do better.  Now, I know what I have to do to maximize my body and reach my goal to become the best natural bodybuilder ever!"

Castleberry's 595 lbs. Press & 275 Curls
Seeing him on stage, the 2006 Musclemania World Junior Champion carries a powerful presence.  But when you see Bradly Castleberry hit the weights in the gym, you quickly understand how his developed his amazing physique.  In his new DVD, he lifts incredible poundages and with strict form.  At 5'10", 225 lbs., Bradly forces a 595 lbs. bench press and 275 lbs. arms curls, for reps! The 21 year old lifetime natural bodybuilder is testimony that you can create what he calls a "monstrous" physique without steroids.   Currently sponsor by Magnum Nutrition, Bradly is training heavy for the 2007 competition season which will include the Musclemania World Championships in November where he will move up into the Men's Open HW Class and take on some
Class and take on some veteran big boys. Bradly Castleberry - Junior World Body DVD is now available at the Musclemania On-Line Store .

I Want to Earn the Right
He started competing at the 2000 Musclemania Canada and dominated the LW Class competition.  Since then, Greg Doucette has moved up to the MW Class and won virtually every Canadian natural bodybuilding competition.  The high school school teacher and wrestling coach is also a Canadian National Powerlifting Champion with best lifts like 636 lbs. squat, 507 lbs. bench and 661 lbs. deadlift while under 180 lbs. bodyweight. Currently, Greg is weighing 188 lbs. at 9% bodyfat and is training for his return to Musclemania Superbody at 175 lbs.  Say's Greg, "I still want to earn the right to become a MM Pro.  The average Joe does not understand bodybuilding and some guys here think I
am already a Pro and ask me if I think I can beat (former Mr. Olympia) Ronnie Coleman!"  Although Greg won't have to compete against the like of IFBB Pros, he will have to contend with some amazing natural bodybuilders who also want to win the MW Class and earn MM Pro status.  With Greg's thickly muscle physique, balanced symmetry and top line condition, he'll be a tough opponent in Miami.  For more information about Musclemania Superbody, visit www.universeweekend.com .

Aloha Jock
When you're raised on the Big Island of Hawaii, sports are a natural way of life.  But Alvin Viernes took it further by playing football and wrestled becoming a high school state champion.  Then, the 5'5", 160 lbs. athlete picked up the weights, packed on nearly 20 lbs. of muscle and won the Teenage Hawaiian Islands Championships.  "I grew so fast that I sort of surprised myself," claimed Alvin.  "All the way through high school, I trained but always had to diet just to make the weight class.  Now, as a bodybuilder, I can just let my body grow."  With a mellow aloha spirit mixed with a fierce degree of competitive intensity, the 21 year old University of Hawaii engineering student has gained another 10 lbs.
of muscle, fined tuned his physique and is currently training for the Musclemania World Tour at Superbody Junior Championships in Miami, Florida.  According to Alvin, "I am keeping up my grades, hitting the gym everyday and surfing whenever I get a chance."  And, he probably should have mentioned that to help pay his way through school, Alvin performs as a Polynesian cruises hula dancer on weekends.  No doubt, this Hawaiian college student is preparing for a professional career, but his athletic pursuits go to the heart of his passions.

Discipline & Dedication
The reasons for lifting weights and enduring disciplined diets are as varied as there are serious bodybuilders.  Many train for physical endurance, ensuring a healthy body and love the intensity of a grueling work out.  Others are more narcissistic and want the attention and satisfaction of public acceptance and glowing recognition.  In the instance of Musclemania Pro Philip Ricardo, he trains for the lore of becoming the world's best natural competitive bodybuilder all the while
knowing that there may be another competitor on his heals chasing to surpass his achievements.  The US Marine Sergeant has always displayed the discipline needed to honor his military commitments, be devoted to his family obligations and aspire toward his personal goals.  This month, we welcome Philip Ricardo as the newest Musclemaniac and trust you will enjoy learning more about this lifetime natural superstar. More . . .

Rip'n Ryklon
World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) has signed Musclemania HW freak Ryklon Stephens to a "developmental deal".  Big Ryk most recently competed at the 2003 Musclemania World in California but has been pursuing professional wrestling since his move from Brooklyn, New York, to Los Angeles two years ago.  The 28 year old husband and father is an impressive 6'2", 270 lbs. and originally from the Caribbean.  Ryk has limited professional wrestling experience but has been training with the California-based United Professional Wrestling.  He's assigned to the WWE's Deep South Wrestling in Georgia.  You can check-out intense Ryk's Musclemania bodybuilding training routine.

Comeback Season
The latest from Asia comes from Musclemania Pro Syed Fazli who is considered the region's best natural bodybuilder.  He first started competing on the 2001 Musclemania World Tour and three years ago earned pro status.  Last season, the 35 year old star focused on his actor and sports model career in Malaysia and is now preparing to return to the MM Pro stage.  "When I came home after the 2005 Musclemania Pro World, I took time out to focus on local opportunities.  I think I made everyone at home proud and got a lot of media attention, so I was really honored," says Syed.  With his accolades, he will return to America this year to compete at both the MM Pro Superbody and MM Pro World but with a different physique.  Syed promises that, "I have taken time to improve my body particularly with more beauty and symmetry . . . but will compete at least 15 lbs. bigger than two years ago.  I will be a totally new person in Miami!"  At 5'8", he will compete weighing at least 200 lbs. rivaling that of some taller MM Pro superstars like Ulisses Jr., Morris Mendez and Philip Ricardo.

New Bodies
Each season, there are always new and exciting bodybuilders entering Musclemania shows around the world for the first time. And, judging by the photos being sent, this year will be one of the best ever. Every few weeks, we will add some of these new entries for you to read about and encourage you to send photos and information about yourself and your friends, too.

One undiscovered talent is Leandro Trotta of Argentina. The 28 year old personal trainer has only competed twice but won each time. At 5'8", 180 lbs., Leandro has super symmetry and is hotly pursued by commercial agencies in Buenos Aires. And, although all of the major Argentine bodybuilding organizations want him to compete (including NABBA, IFBB, WABBA, WBF), Leandro trains all natural and is planning to compete at Musclemania Argentina and then, in 2008, Musclemania World.
Another rising star hails from the land of the Pharaohs. Mohammed Mohsen is a 24 year old personal trainer who is currently working in Saudi Arabia. He has competed in numerous Egyptian competitions but never outside of the country. At 5'7", 185 lbs., Mohammed is training to compete at Musclemania Superbody in Miami. Then, from the far reaches of Central Asia is a powerful young bodybuilder who's passion for bodybuilding is only surpassed by his zeal to complete his college education.
In France, there is a new competitor who despite being 31 years old and training for 15 years has only compete twice. Ferrand Alhajdi stands 5'8", weighs just 165 lbs and has incredibly small joints and dense muscle development. He casts an illusion of being nearly 200 lbs. on stage and is always an audience favorite. Married with a new baby boy, Ferrand trains for recreation and when he has time but has dedicated this year to competing at Musclemania Europe being held in Paris.
Central America may consists of a cluster of small countries, but they produce some incredible bodybuilding potential including the newly crowned Musclemania Central America Champion, Victor Montoya of Honduras. The 5'6" bodybuilder is a hotel fitness center director and has only competed once before taking a four year respite to train and gain. Victor is training to compete at Musclemania Superbody in Miami at 175 lbs. He swears to be lifetime natural and has the muscle condition and development of a more advance bodybuilder.
Twenty-one year old Murtuza Rasheed has been training for 4 years under the tutelage of a former Mr. India. And, with support of his family, he has been able to acquire the necessary food and sports nutrition to maximize his physique while being a leading promoter of natural bodybuilding. Murtuza is training for Musclemania India which will be televised on ESPN India.
More Musclemania entries will be posted soon.

Muscle Memories
After the MM World excitment and everyone was settled back home, some of the competitors sent their thoughts about the show, their plans and natural bodybuilding. We thought you'd like to read some of the messages.

I enjoyed the experience and met some outstanding athletes and accomplished my goal of competing against and placing very high in the toughest natural Pro shows in the world.  I know the audience loved seeing the best Pros put on an unbelievable show on a great stage venue.
- Phillip Ricardo, Jr., MM Pro 2nd Place

I wanted to thank you for pushing me to improve myself and go to California.  I have to say that the Musclemania World was one of the best experiences of my life, and it totally inspired me to keep moving forward.  You told me that I have to get down there to see what life is like away from Toronto, and now all I want to do is go back.
- Renaldo Gairy, MM Pro 3rd Place

Just wanted to say thanks for a good show, loved the venue. Of course I'm disappointed with my placing, but I have no one to blame but myself. I have never seen a Pro show with such great routines. I want to congratulate all the Pros for their fantastic performances . . . Anyway, you haven't seen the last of me, I'll be back, better than ever, and with a better routine  this time.
- Larry Vinette, MM Pro 4th Place

I was happy about my place and felt very proud to place 3rd in the Musclemania show. I want you to know that you made a childhood dream come true for me.
- Andrew Merrifield, Open LW 3rd Place

Wow! What an amazing time I had over the past week.  My win has fueled my passion to become a world class natural athlete in bodybuilding.  I will now work on building further muscle and, who knows, maybe even contending with Bradley in a year or two.
- Rob Riches, Junior LW Winner

Let me start by saying that the Musclemania Worlds show in Hollywood was a terrific experience and easily the best show I have ever seen let alone competed in. I have never felt such a rush as I did on that stage.  I was very motivated and intrigued by all these different types of people from different countries that came to the Musclemania stage for the love of the sport. I was amazed to find out just how much we all had in common even though our cultures are so different. This was an experience that I will never forget and would give anyone a greater appreciation for what we do as competitive bodybuilders.
- Ivano Di Francesco, Junior 2nd Place

Musclemaniacs at Universal Studios
Nearly 100 of the world's best natural bodybuilders claimed their fame at the recent Musclemania World Championships.  Held at the glitzy Universal Studios Hollywood, the competition was a special occasion for the athletes which included a variety of divisions with all of the finals on the exciting Fear Factor Live stage!  Winners included David Whittaker (Pro), Nick Jones (Open), Annie Hewitt (Women), William Simpson (Novice), Michele Levesque (Figure), Sedric Gant (Masters) and Bradley Castleberry (Juniors).  Contest results are posted and the complete photo gallery will be available on next Friday.  The 2007 Musclemania World Tour schedule will be posted by December 30.

On Top From Down Under
He came to Hollywood as a virtual unknown to most established Musclemania competitors.  And, even at the Weigh-In's, nobody really gave much notice to the Aussie middleweight.  Sure, you could see he had good shape and nice muscle bellies, but it wasn't until you saw him on stage next to the other competitors that Nick Jones came to life and captured the judges attention.  The 32 year old nutrition company manufacturer had just won the MM Australia four weeks earlier.  But, Nick has been competing for over 10 years throughout Australia and internationally, so he knows how to condition his physique while maintaining good muscle volume and classic symmetry.  And, it was muscle definition that won Nick the overall title at MM World in a razor thin, double round vote
among the other weight classes beating out BW Tony Montalbano (Britain), LW Carlos Rojero (Mexico), LHW Bobby Wagner (USA) and HW Rob Terry (Britain).

Junior Jostle
It may have taken him 3 times, but California bodybuilder Bradly Castleberry stormed the Musclemania World Junior Championships by winning both the Heavyweight Class and Overall titles.  At 5'10", 200 lbs., the former skateboarder has been lifting in strict powerlifting form for the past year which also help him win the Musclemania Superbody Junior Championships in Miami last June.  But his final preparation was also different this time.  Bradly explained,  "I dieted for 6 weeks time but normally I get serious just a couple of weeks before a show.  I also practiced my posing because I always look stupid on stage.  This time I knew what I was doing."  Having just turned 21, Bradly has
another year to compete in the Junior Division and next season plans to compete in some Musclemania International events including Mexico, Canada and Europe which are open events.  Other great junior bodybuilders at Musclemania World included '06 MM Britain Rob Riches who won the Lightweight Class, followed by Larry Camacho , a 19 year old first timer from Long Beach, California who has amazing shape and potential.  '06 MM Texas  Junior Champ Chris Darby and Hawaiian sensation Alvin Viernes were also audience favorites followed by Nick Wolinski all the way from Scotland.  In the Heavyweights, '06 MM Canada Ivano Di Francesco showed great improvements followed by Egyptian Mahmoud Mowafy who was competing in America for the first time.  Both David Higuera Cooke and James Tangherlini were first timers who are full time college students.

He Came, He Conquered
At 260 lbs., he was the biggest man on the Musclemania World stage!  Heavyweight Rob Terry was by far a giant killer earning a near perfect score which his massive size and incredible symmetry, especially for a big man.  He literally tower over the other competitors when he took the stage and wooed the audience.  The 26 year old bank teller from Wales had won the '04 MM Superbody in Miami Beach but has layed low for the past two seasons to perfect what was an already impressive physique.   Rob has been competing since he was 17 years old winning nearly all junior bodybuilding competitions throughout Britain.  But, now having won his weight class and becoming a MM Professional, he will have to take on another giant in David Whittaker who also steam rolled his competition at Universal Studios Hollywood.

King Of The Hill
Whenever this guy walks into a room, you can't help but take pause and give him his due.  At 6'3", 230 lbs., David Whittaker is
more than a dominant force in the MM Pro ranks capturing a near perfect score at the Prelims where symmetry, size and condition matter.  He is on a roll this year having won the MM Superbody in Miami in June where newcomer Philip Ricardo Jr. won the LHW Class and overall title and earning MM Pro status.  But stacked against a major heavyweight force, Philip could only breach David's wall of muscle in the Finals where posing matters.  The former high school basketball player comes a big family in terms of body size.  David's brother, a former collegiate football star, still weighs over 260 lbs. and helps put him through his motions at the gym.

Emperor of Muscle
The 2nd Annual Musclemania China Championships featured many of the country's best bodybuilders including Liu Xing Gang from Shengyang. At 5'9", the 4 time IFBB China Champion has been training 10 years and weight 207 lbs. (94 kg) on stage. He said competing in Musclemania put his training business in peril because he was banned from the IFBB which is the only officially government recognized bodybuilding organization. So then, "Why chance competing at Musclemania", we asked Liu Xing. "I am tired of going nowhere with bodybuilding and wanted to move up in the sport and do something with my career," he said. Liu Xing continued, "Now that I have won Musclemania China, I have applied for my travel visa and look forward to competing at Superbody in Miami next year. It would be like a dream - to train and competing and America. And, I thank Musclemania for hopefully making this happen." For a complete MM China photo report, visit the Gallery.

Musclemania at the Olympia
He may be a Musclemania Pro, but Rico Elbaz was hired to co-host the recent Olympia Weekend webcast and DVD's. The 30 year old Las Vegas resident did competitor interviews among most of the Mr. Olympia contestants as well as two-days of fitness personality and celebrity highlights at the Olympia Expo. Along with Ms. Bikini Universes Melissa Hall and Katie Uter, Rico brought a fresh and exciting perspective while helping to make the show loads of fun for the viewing audience. Rico is one of Las Vegas' hottest male dancers and performs at many of the major resorts and casinos. In addition to being a competitive natural bodybuilders, he was a Top 10 Finalist at this year's Model Universe.

Mezza Mass
He came into the show with credentials enough to scare off the most seasoned of competitors, but 5'7", 157 lbs., Andrew Merrifield was at Musclemania Britain to energized an already pumped audience.  Known as Mezza, he won the LW Class and split decision against an impressive MW Class winner, Shoaib Zahoor from Lahoore, Pakistan.  The 2-time British MW Champion has been training since he was 13 years old and owns a fitness shop in West Yorkshire.   And, as the winner, Mezza said in a heartfelt way upon being crowned, "Thank you for the opportunity to compete in Musclemania and, now, being able to compete in America."  As the Musclemania Britain Champion, he will be sponsored to compete at Musclemania World
at Universal Studios.  "This is the biggest day of my life!", an exhausted Mezza said in front of the audience. MM Britain photo gallery posted next week.

Southwest Stars
The latest addition to the Musclemania World Tour featured a great new bodybuilder who has won all of his competition outings. Carlos Lara of Chiapas, Mexico, has been in four shows since he started competing this year and won all of them, including the recent Musclemania Southwest in Laredo. The 27 year old personal trainer was accompanied by Fitness Southwest Pageant Champion Abby Wolf of Austin, Texas, who has also won all of her competitions including the NPC Texas, Alamo Classic and Texas Classic Cup. At 5'7", 180 lbs., Carlos dieted from an off-season 200 lbs. and will compete at MM World in Hollywood while Abby will compete at FAP. Say's Carlos, "I am from a poor town and really motivated to make a career in bodybuilding and do something with my life."

Model Muscle Man
Always a serious athlete, South Florida's Peter Marrero has developed a more than athletic looking physique.  The former high school All America track & field star went to compete as a collegiate decathlete.  Graduating with a degree in health services and a masters in criminal justice, Peter soon found himself without a competitive arena.  So, the 5'8", 158 lbs. jock competed at the 2005 Model Universe in Miami and struck the judges with his impressive charisma and presence.  Not good enough to win, however, he decided to train for the year and packed on over 15 lbs. of muscle.  But when he took the stage again but at 175 lbs. at the 2006 Model Universe, everyone kept saying, "What's he doing in modeling - he should be competing in Musclemania!"   Say's Peter, "Ya, that's what
everyone was telling me.  Adding muscle comes easy to me just like dieting does.  I have been doing it throughout and high school and college."  He is now training to become a firefighter paramedic but is aiming to add an additional 15 lbs. of muscle for the 2007 Musclemania Superbody in Miami.  Peter continued, "I think I can compete at 190 lbs. if I set my mind to it.  It's a lot of hard work, but I really enjoying training and competing.  It's in my blood."  We'll be keeping you posted about Pete's training regimen and progress throughout the year.

New York Juniors
An intense line-up of junior bodybuilders powered into New York City for a clash reminiscent of football defensive line.  At 5'10" and just 164 lbs., Buffalo native Tommy Champion, Jr. won the closely competitive division  over first time competitor Chris Kyes of Maine.  The two 21 year old college students have extensive athletic backgrounds with Tommy an already seasoned junior bodybuilder and Chris a 4-year high school letterman in football, basketball and tennis.  Third place winner Scott Milczewski has been competing for 3 years and already has a bachelors degree in physics and is pursuing a teaching credential.  First timer Chris Wood took 4th place and collegiate football and basketball player William Chavez captured 5th.  The MM Junior Division has been growing every year with better and more competitive bodybuilders taking the stage.  At the MM World in Hollywood, both the Student Body (high school students) and Junior (22 and under) Divisions will be featured with new and experienced bodybuilders from throughout the US, Canada, Mexico and around the world.

Wild Man in New York
MM Pro Sean Larson will be hosting Musclemania & Model New York, next
Sunday at Triceba PAC in Manhattan.  Although always witty and fun, this will be first time Sean has hosted any event or public appearance.  So, how is he couping with preparation for the show.  "Just let everyone know that you're taking the animal out'a the woods and putting him in the city.  But, a warning to the athletes and spectators. A lot of people for the most part know my personality and that I bring the heat!", boasts Sean.  He won the '05 MM Atlantic and is preparing for the MM World in Hollywood in November.

Winner's Mix
The recent Canadian Championships was the most exciting in recent years with many new and veteran competitors.  And, it was these returning and fresh athletes which surprised everyone with new routines, bodies and appearances.  Toronto personal trainer MM Champion Michael Kwao hadn't been seen on the MM Canada stage for four years yet four times was the charmer for MM Junior Champ Ivano Di Francesco who added muscle mass and improved his condition for each consecutive show.  The 22 year old college student says he benefited from working as an assistance chef at a Italian catering hall.  Esther Marson, the veteran Ontario bodybuilder that won the MM Women's Division, catches her own fish, cleans and eats it as part of her competition diet.  And, newcomer, Tanara Vahn stoned plummeted her competition in both the MM Figure and Fitness Canada Pageant.

Canadian Champion
He first competed at Musclemania Canada seven years ago but his encore performance had the winning formula.  Michael Kwao of Toronto weighed in at 183 lbs. with perfect shape and symmetry and an entertaining performance and it was this combination which won him the Heavyweight and Overall titles.  Said Michael, "I really can't believe I finally won this show."  In his weight class, he beat computer software designer Robert Lagana who was making his comeback after a 6 year layoff and freight broker Matt Tsinkorang.  Michael has been training for 10 years after immigrating from Ghana, Africa.  The 31 year old personal trainer says, "Now, I need to get everything together to compete with the Pros," referring to the MM World Pro Championships in Hollywood in November.

Rajaram
When Peter Rajaram competed last year at MM Canada, people were amazed
to learn that he was 43 years of age.  As he won the Master Division, his physique and performance was like that of someone half his age .  So, when Peter registered for this year's show, people were even more surprised to learn that his 22 year old son Chris would be competing in his first bodybuilding competition.  "When your Dad's as much into bodybuilding as mine is, it kind of wears on you," said Chris.  Athletically, he's an experienced martial artist and ran track in high school but started lifting just 6 months ago.  At 5'9", 145 lbs., Chris admits he's got a ways to go to catch up with his Dad.  But according to
Peter, "My son's a natural and could easily eclipse me sooner than he thinks."  Dad is a personal trainer and Salsa dancer and Chris is a manufacturer technician.

Champions of Champions
A U.S. Marine Corps. Sergeant, a New York personal trainer, a California
telephone sales representative and a Florida stay home mom represented the recent MM Superbody Champions.  Philip Ricardo (Open Men), Janelle Gallo (Women), David Whittaker (Pro) and Heather Green (Figure) were clearly the favorites in their categories.  After three attempts over six years, Philip finally and achieved MM Pro status.  Janelle took off 3 years from competing and was making her comeback while David was redeeming himself after loosing to Morris Mendez and Sami Al Haddad at the '05 MM World.  And, Heather will forever have the honor of being the first MM Superbody Figure Champion.  Complete results are posted and the premium photo gallery is ready for viewing.  A free gallery and lots of behind-the-scene images will posted on Wednesday.

Tattoos Avant Garde
It seemed that muscle bound tattoos were more than in vogue at the recent MM Superbody.  Embellishing personal messages into their biceps, shoulders, lats and legs, the artistic graphics, the bodybuilders wore Asian symbolism, American Indian, Greek mythology and other designs with pride throughout the Universe Weekend.  Said one of the canvased men, "It stands for my heritage and I am proud to wear it on the Musclemania stage."

The British Are Coming!
The upcoming MM Superbody will be loaded with awesome natural bodybuilders around the US and the world. But it seems that British bodybuilders are bringing an exceptionally tough team including Michael Hunter. The former martial arts competitor started competing in Musclemania shows just two years ago and since has won the '04 MM World Novice Division and, now, 20 lbs. heavier, will now move up into the Open MW Class. The London native says, "I've been working like a dog on my size and symmetry and sacrificing nearly everything else in my life to make it all come together." At 5'7" and 180 lbs., Michael carries the appearance of 200 lbs.
and will be a force for his rivals. "I want to win in Miami and again at the Britain in September. They're my goals for the year," he claims. Michael will be joined by training partner and HW competitor Jerry Abadon who's also made impressive gains since last year's Superbody.

Mucho Macho Modelo Mexico
Nearly 100 sports models competed at the recent Model Mexico representing a variety of professions including university students, civil servants, a doctor, attorney, librarian, two engineers and many others plus loads of personal trainers.  The talent pool made the judging incredible difficult and almost seemed to be influenced by the sold-out audience.  Unfortunately, extremely gifted models like Oscar Gallardo of Mexico City who has just started appearing in magazines, fashion advertisements, television shows and commercials.  Although he did not even place among the Top 3 Finalists, the media pool was chasing the 6', 180 lbs. former soccer player for
photo shoots and interviews.  Said Oscar after the show, "This was so much fun!  Modeling work pays the bills, but these competitions expose me to a lot of new potential opportunities."  As college student and personal trainer, Oscar says he's looking forward to competing in the United States.  But, the next Mexican show is Model Latino in Mexico City in October.

Team Mexico
At the recent Musclemania Mexico, a huge squad of bodybuilders from throughout the country aimed to win sponsorship to travel and compete at Musclemania Superbody.  Luis Fernando Fernandez won the 80 kg Class and Overall Title in his first open level competition.  At just 21 years old, he beat out many veteran Mexican bodybuilders including three former Mr. Mexico Champions.  Yet, at 5'8", 175 lbs., he was the lightest MM Mexico winners ever.  Instead of competing in Miami, Luis has decided to train for MM World in Hollywood in November.  MM Mexico was held in conjunction with the Fitness, Ms. Bikini and Model Mexico Championships to a completely sold-out audience.  Other outstanding competitors was 90 kg. runner-up Santiago Almazan who is from the USA but with duel citizenship opted made the trip from Los Angeles to Mexico City to compete.  The judges said that he had the best shape and symmetry in the show but lost out because of his lack of condition.  Santiago, too, is aiming for MM World.  Complete MM Mexico results and photo gallery will be posted next week.

Female Dominance
With looks of a fashion model and shapely body of an Olympic athlete, Maryland's Rachelle Cannon swept the first ever Musclemania Atlantic Figure Division and 2nd Place in MM Women's Division.  The 5'1", 126 lbs. personal trainer was an audience favorite in Musclemania, but her Figure win caused and continues to create havoc among some of the other competitors and their unhappy coaches.  Because Rachelle was permitted to compete in both divisions, some feel that she was tossed an unfair advantage and that the seasoned judges did not know what they were looking for in a Figure competitor.  Said one competitor referring to Rochelle, "She's obviously too muscular to even be allowed to compete in Figure." As the inaugural competition,
perhaps the judges needed to be better oriented what the Musclemania Figure criteria is and more specific criteria outlined for competitors.  But nothing can or should change that Rochelle has a beautifully muscular body and was worthy of her big win!  Of course for ladies who are not naturally muscular, the Ms. Bikini shows offer an ideal venue to showcase their shape and contours.  More news, results and photos from the Atlantic will be posted next week.

King of the Hill
For Louis Santiago, the journey to winning the '06 Musclemania Atlantic was anything but a typical contest diet.  At 5'5" and weighing a fat 210 lbs., he followed his older brother and started on a 7 year journey of fat loss, conditioning and muscle development.  Explains Louis, " In one year I lost 70 lbs. and started training with my cousin at a local gym. At the time, I thought I was eating a nutritional diet.   But, n ow I really grasp the concept of eating healthier, wholesome foods in there purest form, the way revolutionary eating goes back to first man."  Competing for just two years, Louis has won 6 amateur competition weight classes but his quest for Musclemania
was his ultimate goal.  But, his family comes
before all else.  " When I'm not in the playground (gym), my time is spent with my wonderful fiancée Angela, and our two beautiful girls, Geavonia 15, and Naviah 2. They are the reason why I stay focused and ambitious in everyday living. They are the biggest blessing to me and give me the true meaning of life", says Louis.  Now as the newest Musclemania Pro, Louis is qualified to compete both the Superbody in Miami and World's in Hollywood.  Complete Musclemania Atlantic results and photo gallery will be posted next week.

Strong Assets
He may be a newcomer to Musclemania, but Corey Simpson is a military, football and bodybuilding veteran who's out to challenge the best in natural bodybuilding.  At 5'9", 190 lbs., he was high school star running back but failed to get the kind of scholarship he felt worthy of this time and opted for a four year hitch in the US Army.  "When I was stationed in Alaska, I entered my first bodybuilding contest - the 1994 State Championships - and placed second," says Corey.  From there he competed in many amateur competitions winning most weight or overall titles.  Now back home in Tampa and married with two kids, he is the head trainer at a major area fitness complex.  Corey says that, "I am also the co-creator of Rapid Reaction, a class that incorporates endurance exercises,  core conditioning
and an overall full body workout."  But despite his vast knowledge and experience in training and nutrition, his decision to compete in Musclemania has to do with performance more than just body size, shape and preparation.  "I like that the Musclemania shows emphasize the art of posing which I feel is one of my stronger assets."  Corey claims that he stays in shape throughout the year and contest preparation requires no more than loosing water and tightening up a bit.  Oh, how lucky can he be!  Well, we will see how easy it is for Corey at Musclemania Superbody in Miami.

New Model Teams

In just 5 years, Model Universe has grown each year with new and undiscovered men and women sports models who went on to appear in magazines, commercials, campaigns, runway shows and lots more.  However, like everything else male, the guys have begun to team up in an all out assault to win the 2006 Team Challenge Championships.  Most of these muscle models are clients of web based agencies and fitness photographers.  Most notable are True Image Photography and La Los Models, both of Florida, who each have already registered over 10 models.  And, why?  "The Universe is a great way for some of my models to be seen by the shakers and makers in the business," says Philip Brown of True Image.  "I have got some really hot models who live in small towns and cities across America and just need a chance to be seen.  They'll be in Miami ready to turn some heads."  Some other representatives sending their clients to Model Universe include Modellaunch, All American Guys, Silver Models, North American Bodybuilders, Apollo Models and others.

The Killer Kiwi
He was a total unknown, unsure if he was ready to compete in the local New Zealand show and yet when Sanjeev Naranyan entered the theater, he was all the buzz.  The 29 year old chemical engineer was an instant sensation of the Auckland audience with his thickly muscled and symmetrical body.  "I really did not know what to expect, but it was a lot of fun," confessed Sanjeev.  Now, with the local trophy on his mantel, he wants to take his 5'8", 175 lbs. physique to the "next level" with muscle size.  Accordingly to Sanjeev, "I want to be a lot bigger for Musclemania Australia.  When I was younger, American Muscle was on ESPN all the time down here.  I remember Delino Dixon and Ade Rai.  They were really impressive.  So, I know Musclemania well and it's been my dream to compete at the World's."  As Sanjeev prepares for Musclemania Australia, we will post regular photo updates.

Military Muscle
He entered his first bodybuilding contest unshaven, no tan and didn't even know how to pose.  But, now 14 years later, Marine Corps Master Sergeant Philip Ricardo is on top of his game and career. He entered his first bodybuilding contest unshaven, no tan and didn't even know how to pose.  But, now 14 years later, Marine Corps Master Sergeant Philip Ricardo is on top of his game and career.  The 5'9", 215 veteran has been as consistent with bodybuilding as his military profession with equal achievements.  Ricardo was a talented high school jock but after graduation skipped college and went straight to the Marine Corp.  He started lifting at just 140 lbs. and has consistently developed his physique and improving each year.  Today, the demands and rigors of work, training and family keep Ricardo very focused.  "I presently work about 14 hours a day - 7 to 4:30 PM with the Marines, then do personal training 6 to 10 at LA Fitness", he explained. "Its tough, but I know what I need to do if I want to become a true champion this year."  Ricardo is the Division Assistant Chief of Targeting for US Southern Command which helps fight the global war on terrorism and counter drug interdiction in South and Central America.  And, he can attest that, "It takes the discipline that I learned as a Marine to stay focused on my training and diet no matter where I am deployed for months at a time."   Ricardo has won it all in the ABA/PNBA and IFPA organizations and feels he is now ready to take on the Musclemania ranks.  "I know if I do well at Superbody, maybe I will finally get some respect.  I have competed with and even beaten some Musclemania Pros, so I know that I deserve to be exposed in some way," asserted Ricardo.  He'll be in Miami on June 24 disciplined, shaved, tanned and posing like the Musclemania Pro he wants to be.

I Shall Return
In 2002, at his first Musclemania World Championships, Rycklon Stephens preceded his finals posing routine with an on-stage proposal of marriage to his girlfriend.  He didn't win even his weight class but gained a lovely wife who is now his foremost supporter.  Rycklon is a giant bodybuilder and semi-professional wrestler.  On his 6'3" frame he carries a massive 275 lbs. but with symmetry more resembled of lighter and shorter bodybuilder.  Originally from the Caribbean, his formative years were in Brooklyn, New York,  before his recent move to Southern California.  "I have always wanted to live on the west coast - it's got all the right things to help my bodybuilding and personal training careers," said Rycklon.  After a two year break from serious training,
he's resumed twice-a-day workouts to prepare for the Musclemania World in Hollywood.  As he explains it, "Now that we've made our move to California, I hot and on fire for November.  The heavyweight class will be mine this year!"  Rycklon will be facing other rising impressive heavyweights including Rob Terry (Britain) and Juan Pablo Salgado (Chile) who are also fiercely determined to become the next Musclemania Heavyweight Champion

African Passion
More and more, Musclemania is capturing the essence of bodybuilding.
This is what we witnessed during our visit to the 1st Annual Musclemania
West Africa held recently in Ghana.  Promoted by native son and MM Pro
Kofi Abrampah, the show attracted the very best African bodybuilders to
the stage and it was loaded with excitement and a raging, cheering
crowd.  The competitors had never been part of such a prestigious show
and their enthusiasm couldn't be masked.  Loaded with personality,
reigning Mr. Ghana Christopher Antoh (photo, right) was an obvious
favorite although he finished in second in the MW Class.  Lifting in
West Africa is intense and serious.  The bodybuilders don't use drugs
primarily because they don't have them.  There are no fancy gyms, no
sports supplements and no custom fit workout wear.  But there is lots of
sweat, hard training, dedication and an honest love and passion for the
sport of bodybuilding.  And, with the introduction of Musclemania to
this frequently ignored region of the world, some of the best African
bodybuilders have found sponsors and will be competing at Musclemania
Superbody in Miami in June.  The MM West Africa gallery will be posted
soon.

I Know The Truth
When he powered his way on MM World stage, you could hear the audience gasp.  At 6'3", 240 lbs., MM Pro David Whittaker literally towered over the line-up with incredible muscle mass and condition.  But training for the competition wasn't that tough he claims.  "I really don't need to cut much because I keep a pretty tight diet all season.  I only had to loose 10 lbs.," David explained.   At MM World, David was in second place following the Preliminary Round (75% of the score) but fell back to third place after the Final Round.  "I know my posing lacks and I got to work on it," he admitted.  David started competing in MM at the 2004 MM World where he easily won the Heavyweight Class and Overall title.  But, it has been with a bit of controversy since the INBA organization has been claiming on their website that "David Whittaker . . . tested positive for Furosemide, Nandrolone or precursors: Norandrosterone measured at 1350 ng/ml, stanzolol and metabolites in both A and B samples" at one of their 2004 contests held just 1 week before MM World. However, when David confronted the organization and challenged it to produce the actual test results, they refused.  And, when he contacted the Scandinavian laboratory which the organization claimed conducted the test, he was told they had no information about his test.  "It's been over a year and they still have not provided me with any computerized test results," David asserted.  Big men are common in the Whittaker family.  "My brothers and I are all big guys.  On of my younger brothers weights over 280 lbs.!  In school were all jocks and played football and a bunch of other sports."  At both the 2004 and 2005 Musclemania World, David submitted to supervised urinalysis sampling with computerized and verified negative results each time.  So, how could David test positive in one organization's test results yet negative in another.  According to him, "I know the truth and have never used any drugs or steroids.  And, at Musclemania I have the test results to prove it."  David is currently preparing for MM Superbody in the Pro Division in June.  But, he claims, "This time I will pose like a dancer."

Lying Low
"Where was Ulisses last year?"  We get the question all the time.  In 2005, the '04 MM Superbody Pro Champion wasn't at either MM Superbody or MM World, even to watch.  The smooth talking, easy going Adonis called the MM offices recently to tell us he was preparing to return to Miami Beach and sweep Superbody, again.  "Yeah, I was working on opening my new personal training studio and it was a lot of work," Ulisses said.  With the encouragement of his main client, famed crooner Harry Connick Jr., Ulisses focused on business last year.  "But, I miss the muscle scene and really love performing," he claimed.  At 5'10", 200 lbs., the New York City star says to look for a bigger, rounder and more symmetrical version of himself this year.  As Ulisses prepares for Superbody and sends new photos, they will be posted at MM.com. And,
look for his new hardcore muscle DVD to be released in the Spring.

The Real Me
In his first MM Pro outing at MM Superbody, newly crowned MM Atlantic Champion Sean Larson left Miami Beach disappointed.  From a high of winning in New Haven, he was fighting against dominance like fellow Connecticut lifter Morris Mendez who won the contest.  One year later, Sean is training harder than ever before to compete in the first ever MM Atlantic Pro Championships where he will defend his home turf against other MM Pros like first timers Jamel Keels and Kevin Topka and veterans Kofi Abrampah, Hugh Ross and Wil Usher.  "I like
competing in New Haven because its close to home where I have a lot of friends to route me on.  Hey, man, there's nothing like a screaming crowd to cheer you on!", explained Sean.  Since his appearance at last year's Superbody, Sean has added 5 lbs. of muscle and promises to bring back some excitement to his routine.  "My posing in Miami Beach wasn't like at the Atlantic," admitted Sean.  "You'll see more of the real me back on stage next time."

New "Team Challenge" Award
If you've ever attended a high school wrestling tournament, you quickly learned that the wrestlers teammates were each others best supporters.  And, it continued off the mat, into the locker room, on the team bus back home, at practice the next day and throughout the season.  Peer support keeps their spirit alive and the motivation is compounded. However, among bodybuilders, this kind of support is usually missing.  So, starting this season, a new Team Challenge Award will be presented to the team or gym with the highest total scores among their members accumulated throughout the season.  On all Regional, National and International event entry forms, competitors will be asked to state which team, gym, website they are a member or sponsored.  Team winners will receive custom awards, special media recognition including a website roster board scoring updated throughout the season, magazine contest reports, ESPN International television feature and a special, exclusively designed Musclemania jacket (limited to 10) at the conclusion of the season.  If you  are a trainer or team member and would like to register your team or gym and become eligible for the 2006 Musclemania Team Challenge Award, please send us an e-mail message and we will add you to the website roster board.

Ladies of Muscle
The MM World Women's Division featured some of the most impressive bodybuilders ever seen on the Musclemania stage.  It was dominated by Hugarian phenom Erika Taksonyi who at 40 years of age weighed just 135 lbs. but appeared huge in relation to the other competitors.  She is a 10x Hungarian National, European and World Champion.  Erika's shape, symmetry and muscle condition was unparelled and would have been a great match against former MM Champion Lisa Laurence.  Just behind Erika was Kim Knott (HW, 2nd) from Australia who at 5'2", 126 lbs. is an INBA 3x Natural Olympia Champion.  The fitness center manager hadn't lost a competition in 4 years until coming to the show in Hollywood.  Winning the LW Class was Kelli Correa from Massachusetts, a 5'1" fitness lifestyle coach who won the MM Pittsburgh and IFPA Mass Championships earlier in the year.  Leanne Allen (LW, 2nd), is a 3x INBA World Champion and at 45 years of age has two children and is a clinical exercise specialist.  The MM Superbody is Miami Beach will also feature two hotly competitive women's classes and attract many Latin American muscle ladies especially from Columbia, Venezuela and Puerto Rico.

No 125 lbs. Weakling
As a skinny high school kid, James Kohler was an extremely talented athlete including spectacular performance on the high school gridiron, cross country and, at 16 years old, Wisconsin State Tae Kwon Do Champion!  But, he wanted more.  Says James, "I started lifting to get stronger for martial arts because I knew I would be fighting tougher matches."  But his desire to be ready for bigger opponents soon led to intense pumping iron with another interest.  "I bought Arnold's Encyclopedia of Bodybuilding and was completely hooked."  Now, ten years later, James' thirst for a bigger and stronger body has earned him Musclemania Professional status following his Heavyweight Class win last month in Hollywood. Since his last competition at the Musclemania Superbody in Miami
Beach, James added 15 lbs. of muscle to his large 6'3" frame.  "But that's just the beginning for me," he claims.  "Before competing as a Pro next November, I want to train for another 15 lbs.  I know I will be going against guys like Whittaker who's also 6'3"."  For his day job, James and his twin brother Matt work as a personal trainers and go on commercial and television auditions in Hollywood.

From Las Vegas to Hollywood
He may be one of "Las Vegas' hottest entertainers", but Rico Elbaz is also one of the most popular and newest Musclemania stars!  The 28 year old male former Israeli commando moved to Nevada to take on the Sin City's dance circuit and soon became the owner of two highly successful troupes.  Rico has won many local and state NPC shows but starting competing in Musclemania events last April in South Beach.  Then, at the recent Musclemania World Championships in Hollywood, Rico won the Lightheavyweight Class against fierce competition.  "I love this show!" shouted Rico after winning. "The staging, energy and excitement - it make's it all worth the hard work and sacrifice.  I do this stuff for
fun, so it's got be entertaining for me."  Now Rico moves up to the Pro Division and will compete at Superbody in Miami Beach against other hot Musclemaniacs.  The 5'8", 195 lbs. soldier, dancer and business man will soon be a leader on the Musclemania World Tour.

Representing My Kingdom
As Malaysia's #1 heavyweight bodybuilder, Syed Fazli has all the glory a new MM Pro could want including acclaimed media attention, a premiere job at one of Kuala Lumpur's renowned fitness centers, traveling throughout the world at Musclemania shows and more.  But, most important to the 5'8", 195 lbs. natural star is being a role model to his country's bodybuilders and representing the Malay kingdom.   "I want Malays to know that you can build your body without drugs and be happy with the results," says Fazli.  "I come from a small village and never wanted to be famous - just to succeed with my training and represent my country around the world.  That is fulfilling enough for me."  At the Musclemania World Championships in
Hollywood, Fazli was a Top 5 Finalist and a MM Pro for the first time.  "I went home feeling like a hero, but am happy just to be a role model for Malaysian bodybuilders."   Fazli will be a guest performer at the '06 MM Asia in Singapore and other events.

Aztec Muscle Warrior
He hadn't competed for over 2 years, but when Daniel Ortiz stepped on stage at the recent Musclemania Mexico, you knew he had trained to win.  Having added over 15 lbs. of muscle, the former Junior Mr. Mexico presented a quality physique with shape and symmetry.  So, after winning the show and earning his MM Pro status, Ortiz immediately extended his training and prepared for Musclemania World being held just 2 weeks later.  "But, I really wasn't sure whether I would be able to compete," he stated.  "I have never been in the USA and needed to get a visitors visa.  But when I applied at the US Embassy in Mexico City, they refused to give me an appointment until January.  That wasn't going to work, so my
girlfriend called a friend who worked at the Mexican Consulate in Phoenix and she was able to help move things along for me."  Ortiz made the Top 5 in his first MM Pro show and is now training to compete at the Musclemania Superbody in Miami Beach.  "It is really exciting to compete in America and represent my country," claimed Ortiz.  "I feel like an Aztec warrior taking on the best bodybuilders in the world."

World Class Junior Bodies
The Musclemania World Championships is known for its vast array of natural bodybuilders including Professionals, Open Men and Women.  But one of the most impressive was the Junior Division with many first timers who shattered the hopes of more seasoned athletes.  Most notable was the return of Canada's Matt Stirling who captured First Place.  The two-time Canadian and Superbody Junior Champion weighed 193 lbs., his heaviest by 10 pounds since his last competition last year.  Texan Amin Shahry had a powerful physique at 5'6", 163 lbs.  The 21 year old college student was unhappy with his 2nd Place finish but will have a wonderful competitive career as he improves his back and calves.  The big surprise was Bradly Castle, a stunning 5'10", 218 lbs. Musclemania sophomore who added 20 lbs. of muscle since his first show last year.  Taking 3rd Place, Castle has the shape and genetics of Steve Reeves, Dennis Newman and Bob Paris and could be the next superstar if he stays consistent with his training.  Next week, MM.com will update the Junior section with photos of others who competed in regional and international shows around the world this year.

Hollywood Stars
They came from completely different parts of the world.  But Lenee Adkins of Los Angeles, California, and Andrew Ashton of Blackpool, England, were announced winners at the Model America Championships in Hollywood.  Adkins (5'8", 145 lbs.) is a beautiful fashion and hair model who practices boxing and Taebo each week.  Ashton (6', 200 lbs.) is a 22 year old personal trainer who recently moved to Hollywood to further his modeling and commercial aspirations.  They competed against over 100 other sports fitness models from around the world.  Model America judges included many Hollywood commercial and casting agents, talent scouts, photographers and producers.  MTV, Cosmopolitan, many agencies and other industry movers and shakers attend the show and invited selected contestants to auditions and castings.  In 2006, the Model America Tour will include shows in New Haven, Miami Beach, New York, Chicago, Dallas, Toronto, Hollywood, Atlanta, New Orleans, Hawaii and many other cities.

Hollywood Stars
The 15th Annual Musclemania World Championships was the most competitive in its history with new, surprising bodybuilders taking on veteran Musclemaniacs from around the world.  Professional Champion Sami Al Haddad of Bahrain was competing in America for the first time and prepared for an entire year.  At 5'8", 193 lbs., he packaged tremendous size, impressive symmetry and in peak condition.  Amateur Champion Marvin Ward was competing in his first Musclemania show after a 15 year run with the NPC.  The 5'2", 141 lbs. powerhouse took on the more massive, heavier competitors and conquered with his incredibly mature muscle and condition.  And, the Women's Champion was Emila Tailsonyi of Budapest, Hungary who won with a near perfect score.  She was big, shapely and cut . . . like a female bodybuilder should look like.  One hundred plus physiques competed over two days at the famous Hollywood & Highland Center and spent their free time taking photos and meeting with magazine representatives including Muscle & Fitness, Musclemag and other media from around the USA and world.   Complete results will be posted on Wednesday and new photos will be added daily.

Arabian Knight Conquers Hollywood
For many years, he was intrigued by what he had heard about Musclemania shows.  The lights, the sound, the spectacular staging, the glamor, the sensation of competing at the biggest natural bodybuilding contest in the world.  So, Sami Al Haddad of Bahrain, the former IFBB Gulf States Champion set his goal to compete in America for the first time.  Last weekend, in Hollywood, Al Haddad stormed the Musclemania stage with his incredible physique packaged with shape, size and condition. "I didn't compete for a year just to focus on Musclemania", said Al Haddad.  "I've competed at the IFBB World, Asia, Mediterranean and Gulf States shows.  But, I knew that Musclemania would be tougher than anything I had ever prepared
for before."  It was former MM Superbody Champ Stan McQuay who really peaked Al Haddad's curiosity.  Said Al Haddad, "Stan was saying all sorts of things about Musclemania, so I was really excited about competing.  And, now I know for real.  When you come to Musclemania, it's a different experience than any other show.  You just can't understand the feeling of being on the stage until you've been there."   Al Haddad says that he will now start preparing for MM Superbody in Miami Beach, June 2-4.

Muscle Media
Musclemania World and Model America Championships are just 2 weeks away and hundreds of competitors are already registered.  Representing Japan, Germany, Bermuda, South Africa, China, Israel, Finland, Canada, Egypt, Mexico, Australia, Belgium, Malaysia, Bahrain, France, Singapore, Italy, Chile, Jamaica, Indonesia, Columbia, New Zealand, Hungary, Argentina, Britain and many other countries plus all of America, some of the most amazing bodybuilders and fitness models will introduce themselves to Hollywood.  And, in search of the next superstar, fitness media from throughout the industry will be represented including Muscle & Fitness, Musclemag, Fitness Rx for Men, Natural
Muscle, Reps and many more plus a bevy of international publications.  Television coverage will include ESPN International, TSN Canada, Eurosports, DSF Germany, Sky Sports UK, Star Sports Asia, Sports 1 Hungary and many other worldwide sports networks.  And, more than 20 Hollywood agencies have requested access to Fitness Hollywood in search of the their next client.  Being "discovered" starts at the Media Sessions each day plus on-stage, backstage, at the pool, in the hotel lobby and throughout the weekend.   So, come to Hollywood and "Live Your Dreams!"

Natural Wonder
Yes, that's what the muscle media has been calling Morris Mendez who will be compete at the MM Pro World in Hollywood.  Following his recent publicity appearance at MM China, Mendez has focused his training on maintaining his muscle mass while shredding to professional standards.  But, as impressive he is, Mendez will be facing formidable musclemen like first timer David Whittaker, a 6'3", 240 lbs. goliath who's two brothers both weight over 280 lbs.  The San Diego lifter won last year's MM World Men's Open Division and has laid low, training intensely and growing knowing he would be facing stiff competition.  Other first time MM Pros include Zack Barnard ('04 MM New York) and Syed Fazli ('04 MM Superbody)
whom are not as enormous in size like Mendez and Whittaker, but will deliver to the stage shape and symmetry reminiscent of classic physique stars of the 60's and 70's.  Then, Big Ben Agboke who will be making his return to the MM stage after a two year absence.   At 250 lbs., the English bodybuilding star may be the sleeper of the show with size to match Whittaker and symmetry rivaling Mendez.  Next week, we will have updates about other MM Pros mapping their way to Hollywood.

Feed The Machine
As any dedicated bodybuilder knows, good nutrition is the first step toward developing a champion's physique.  And, '03 MM Superbody and '05 Canada Junior Champion Matt Stirling knows the financial pain of preparing for competition.  As he trains for MM World in Hollywood, Matt says, "I am going through $200 a week in groceries plus all of my supplements.  I can barely afforded it!"   But the 22 year old junior sensation is committed to competing at 200 lbs. this year - 22 lbs. more than in 2003.  "I always have a hard time keeping my size because my metabolism is really fast.  So, I have bumped up my food and really am not dieting for the show . . . and it's working."  Matt recently beat another impressive Canadian junior in Ivano Di Francesco who challenged Matt more than at any other contest.  But in Hollywood he will have to fend off a bevy of new, impressive junior bodybuilders from around the country.

Double Dose
For the second time in as many years, Ajala just won Musclemania California in San Diego.  The 5'6", 173 lbs. bodybuilder was competing against an impressive line-up of predominately newcomers on the contest scene but surely dominated the contest with dense muscle in shredded condition.  At 47 years old, coming in shape is more mental than physical for Ajala.  "I have thought about competing in the Masters Division, but am having to much fun beating the kids," claimed Ajala.  Although he has won the Natural Mr. Universe, he has so far avoided taking on the tougher competition at the Musclemania World.  According to Ajala, "That's next!"  MM California contest photos will be posted next week.

Vinette in Venice
Canadian MM Pro Larry Vinette was recently caught in Venice Beach, California, shooting with ace muscle photographer Robert Reif.  In shape for the summer season, he flew from his home base in Montreal and made the rounds with a bunch of other magazine photographers, too, and will soon appear in the cover of Musclemag.  Larry missed the Top 5 at the '04 MM World and has stated, "I may have won everything in Canada, so there is nothing but to shoot for MM World."  Due to a recent injury, he is skipping the year's event but is committed to winning the show.  Larry is the father of 2 young girls and has been married to his high school sweetheart for over 10 years.

Newest MM Pro
Since winning the 2002 Musclemania Atlantic, Kevin Topka has been elusive from the MM circuit.   Still training heavy and developing his impressive physique, but the 28 year old personal trainer from Rhode Island hasn't seen on a contest for 3 years.   Last month, MM promoter Brian Cannone petitioned to have Topka elevated to MM Professional status because the year following his MM Atlantic win, the event became a MM Pro qualifier.  The petition request was granted and a formal letter of acceptance was presented to Topka recently by Cannone.  "I am so happy to finally become a Musclemania Pro," said Topka.  "I've competed and won in many federation contests, but being able to compete against
the best natural bodybuilders in the world gets me pumped."  Topka says he is now training for the 2006 MM Atlantic, MM Superbody and MM World.  And considering he beat MM Pros Morris Mendez and Ulisses Jr. as amateurs, the MM Pro Tour will take on a whole new dynamic next year.

"I'm Not Ready, Yet!"
Is this guy crazy?  Standing 6'2", 285 lbs., goliath Rob Terry dominates mosts MM heavyweight competitions.  But following his 4th Place finish at last year's MM World in California, Terry doesn't want anything but first place when he competes again.  So, the 25 year old bank teller from Britain has decided to forgo the MM World in Hollywood this year and is focused on winning the MM Superbody in Miami Beach, next June.  As Terry said recently, "I'm not ready, yet!  Like any good sportsman, I am never satisfied unless I win."  Since loosing at MM World, he has trained for muscle quality.  "I have kept my diet clean all year and am now carrying over 20 stones (280 lbs.) with less than 5% body fat," Terry explained.
Beginning in 1998, he has won most of Britain's natural shows and, more recently, the '03 MM Superbody HW Class.

Delta
His one of the most humble and unassuming gentleman on the Musclemania World Tour.  But, Louisiana college student Thayer "Tyson" Hill has one of the most amazing physiques.  At 5'10", 195 lbs., Tyson recent won MM Delta having already won the '04 MM Superbody Junior Division.  Ironically, when Tyson first took up weights and lifting, it took some serious influence and encouragement from trainer Brad Borland.  "I really wasn't much into bodybuilding but I liked going to the gym and training," says Tyson.  Now, with two major wins sitting on his trophy self, he's hooked and is training for MM World in Hollywood.  And, he'll be facing some other impressive newcomers in the Lightheavyweight Class.  "I'm aiming for the big boys, this time," asserted Tyson.

In Time of Need
To our bodybuilding family in Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama, all us at Musclemania extend our sympathy.  We are thinking about you and praying for longtime MM bodybuilders including Thayer Hill, Carey Allison, Brad Borland, Jude Clark, Myles Hannaman, Wyatt Vial and all Delta region bodybuilders during these trying times.  We are here to support you in any way needed, so please let us know how we can help you through these devastating times.  And, to all competitors and fans around the USA, please donate money today to help local & national charities care for those made homeless in the wake of Hurricane Katrina.  Here are few for your consideration:

Morris Meets Mao
Among a bevy of Chinese tourists, MM Pro Morris Mendez was an unannounced celebrity while visiting the Forbidden City in Beijing, China.  Following his guest appearance at Musclemania China, last week Morris traveled to the Chinese capitol and spent the afternoon at the Emperor's Palace and other historical landmarks.  He couldn't turn around for more than a minute before another group of tourists would run up to Morris' and feel his arms and chest, of course without asking permission.  "Hey, it got annoying after a while but was a lot of fun.  I guess that's why I lift weights - to get attention," he said.  At MM China, Morris was a superstar among the sold-out audience as he presented a posing routine the likes of which the competitors had never seen before.  Said one of the finalists, "We just don't pose like that here in China."  After eating morsels of Chinese food for a week, Morris informed us that he was now back on his game plan and is preparing for MM World in Hollywood.  More MM China photos and feature next week.

Texas Titan
Texan titan Charles Anderson dominated the recent Musclemania Texas in Houston.  The 5'11", 220 lbs. natural bodybuilder owns a successful personal training center and has competed since 1997 while attending Colorado State University where he earned his BS degree in exercise sports science.  Charles won the '97 Northern Colorado and '99 Paradise Cup in Hawaii.  He is a gourmet cook and loves to travel, but serious, bodybuilding training is his passion.  For now, Charles has his sights on coming to Hollywood.  "I am training heavy for Musclemania World.  That's been my goal all year and now I have every reason to make it all happen," he told us after the Texas show.

Gridiron Body
Trained with the discipline of a collegiate football star, Canadian Kurt Tomlinson has proven to have the mental toughness of a well condition athlete.  But it wasn't until gridiron injuries forced him to move from the field to the gym.  Blessed with extraordinary physical genetics, it didn't take long for Kurt learn how to change his training regimen and develop his weaker body parts.  In his first MM Canada, he was overlooked by the judges but came back the following year and won the LHW crown.  Now, at 5'11", 220 lbs. his sights are on taking the MM Canada crown.  Says Kurt, "I've been working hard for this hard.  My calves and legs are up and I am not going to over diet this time.  I want to be a heavyweight."   We will see Kurt with his new, heavyweight physique as he takes
on giant, 240 lbs. Kip Brown, former MM Canada Junior star Matt Stirling, first time sensation Matt Tsinkorang, Mr. Symmetry Darren Madeo and many other Canadian stars on October 1 in Toronto.  More updates about Musclemania Canada next week.

What's In That Cajun Water?
The recent Delta Championships featured some amazing physiques including overall champion Thayer Hill who also won the '04 MM Superbody Novice in Miami Beach.  But what was exceptionally impressive was the six junior level competitors, many of whom have never competed before.  One of of the most noteworthy was Myles Hannaman, a 3-time Louisiana State Wrestling High School Champion.  The 5'7", 150 lbs. lifter was competing in only his second competition and stormed the stage as the Novice Champion.  Myles follows in the tradition of other former Louisiana teenage stars like '03 Delta Champ Carey Addision and is a college sophmore student.  The 19 year old bodybuilder is currently preparing for the Musclemania World Championships in Hollywood.  Soon, we will have a complete story about Myles, Thayer, Carey and other Delta region bodybuilders whom are taking natural bodybuilding to a new level in Cajun country.

New York Pro
Three years ago, he started as a Junior Division competitor and it took only one more year for the former NCAA football player to capture the title.  Last weekend, Connecticut's Jamel Keels came in ripped and won the MM New York Championships and earned MM Pro status.  Standing 5'11", 185 lbs., he didn't concern himself with size so much as being in conditioned.  Said Jamel following the show, "Last year, I made the mistake of trying to add too much muscle, too fast and sacrificed definition and it showed badly.  This time, I just played it smart."  The 24 year old elementary school teacher is a graduate of Sacred Heart University and is pursuing his master degree in education.

Big City Muscle & Model
To have the "Musclemania look" is a phrase that means more than some people will admit.  It goes beyond just winning a title and affords even the average bodybuilder the luster of becoming a muscle, fitness and/or sports modeling star.  This Saturday, August 20, some of the Northeast's most impressive bodies and faces will be competing at the Musclemania New York and Model New York Championships with the elusive dream of getting "discovered".  These hardcore athletes will make up the most impressive natural bodybuilders to see a Musclemania stage in years.  And, the Model New York will introduce some amazing new athletic bodies and faces whom have already attracted New York talent agents who will attend the competition.  Everything starts at 6:30 PM at the Snug Harbor Cultural Center - Music Hall in Staten Island. Cajun Muscle On Saturday
It's rich in culture and has a slow pace to life.  So, when Musclemania Delta and and Model Delta comes to town, New Orleans kicks into gear with muscle men and sports fitness models from throughout Louisiana and the South.  Next Saturday, this 3rd Annual Championships will feature some impressive natural bodybuilders like '03 MM Delta Junior Champ Carey Addison, '04 MM Superbody Novice Champ Thayer Hill, '03 MM Texas Novice Champ Brad Borland and Junior sensation Myles Hannaman among others.  Model Delta is new to the event this season and will feature some hidden talent deep from the bayou who may qualify to compete at the Model America in Hollywood in November.  You can see all the action this Saturday night, 6 PM at the Westwego Performing Arts Center (just across the Mississippi River from New Orleans).   A photo report will be posted next week.

New Shows, New Muscle
As the Musclemania World Tour continues to expand, so does the attraction for natural bodybuilders to its exciting format of competitions.  Many new international shows are being added including Beijing (China), Belfast (Northern Ireland), Cape Town (South Africa), Moscow (Russia), Latino (Mexico), Ghana (West Africa), Lahore (Pakistan) and others.  And, with most of these new competitions, television shows specials in each respective region of the world will introduce the mainstream public to Musclemania and the virtues of natural bodybuilding training.  Each of these events will produce some impressive talent who are aiming to compete at the MM World Championships for the first time including Viorel Restea, '05 Mr. Romania. Other new
bodybuilders will see the Musclemania World stage in Hollywood, too, and new reports will be posted in the weeks ahead.

Hidden Secrets of Saskatoon
For some, living in Saskatoon, Canada, is like retreating from the real world.  It is a 5 hour drive to the nearest major airport and people still leave their doors open at night.  But, for 23 year old Matt Tsinkorang it has been a culturing environment for his budding bodybuilding career.  At 5'6", 185 lbs., he's finally decided that he is carrying enough size and symmetry to compete.  Matt recently started his diet for Musclemania Canada in Toronto on October 1 and aims to at least win the Middleweight Class.  The former high school football player injured his ankle in his sophomore year and picked up the weights for rehabilitation.  Say's Matt, "Instead of returning to football, I was bitten by the bodybuilding bug and haven't seen a
field since." Well, he's about to see the posing dais for the first time and compete with other Canadian stars like heavyweight Kurt Tomlinson and light heavyweight Matt Stirling.  But, like Matt, you just don't know what other hidden talent from the far north regions of Canada will surprise everyone in Toronto.

Missing Ulisses
He was not at the South Beach or Superbody shows.  So, people have begun to wonder, "Where has Ulisses gone?"  After finishing a disappointing third at last year's Musclemania World, the MM Pro is reportedly taking a year leave of absence to just train and grow.  His goal is to add 10 lbs. of lean muscle and take the Superbody and Musclemania World titles, so watch out, Mo!  And, said Ulisses, "I want to spend the year and focus on opening my own health studio.  It's a great opportunity and I want to do it right and not be distracting with competition."  But, one of the most demanding aspects in Ulisses life right now follows the birth of his new son.  As he put it, "I need to be a Daddy, right now."

Juvenile Behavior
When you're a high school or college student, bodybuilding can be a lot of fun for a lot of reasons.  Whether its for showing off for the girls, part of training for athletics or just looking buff, having muscles is cool for the under 20's.  But, for MM Superbody High School Champ Shane Holiday (photo left), it was a school project.  Yeah, as part of his senior science project, the prep soccer player picked up the weights and packed on some serious muscle. But, since his win, Shane has committed to continuing with competitive bodybuilding and will enter a few more shows this season and attend University of Hawaii this fall.  Superbody Junior Champion Adam Cohen (photo center) started pumping weights because he really wanted to be a competitive bodybuilder and has also won the Junior Division at the '04 MM New York and MM World!  He is a college sophomore in Canada majoring in physical therapy.  Newcomer Myles Hannaman (photo right) attends Southern Louisiana University and was a high school and collegiate wrestling champion.  He got into bodybuilding because he wanted to stay competitive and was a finalist in Miami Beach, his first outing.  Myles was a media favorite because of his athletic physique and good looks and is preparing for Musclemania Delta in New Orleans.  Three top level natural junior bodybuilders, three different reasons driving the pump for iron.

From Harlem to Hollywood
When you grow up in New York City's Harlem, you learn to fend for yourself.  You get no breaks in life and need to make it on your own.   So, when Quanne McCutchen  took to the gym, he wanted it to be his passage to breaker opportunities.  And, when he got sponsored to compete at the recent Musclemania Superbody in Miami Beach, he knew he had an opportunity that he couldn't refuse.  At 5'4", 160 lbs., Quanne has a powerful physique with an illusion much greater than his weight.  He trains at various New York City gyms and is training for Musclemania World in Hollywood.  "I want to develop my legs and calves to match my upper body and then I will be ready for the Worlds," Quanne said recently.  He works as a book store clerk and has a infant son and still lives in Harlem to which he proudly claims, "It's my home and where I learn to work hard and make the most of my life."

Big Mo Takes Home The Gold
MM Pro Morris Mendez quashed his competition at Superbody last month.  At 5'10", 210 lbs., he is a lifetime natural bodybuilder and has quickly become a star in the Musclemania World Tour.  With flawless symmetry, impressive muscle mass and photogenic looks, Mendez has what magazine publishers call, "the complete package."  Already Muscle & Fitness and other magazines have photographed him and commercial offers are beginning to roll in.  For the past few years, there have been an intense rivalry between Mendez and MM Pro Ulisses Jr. but a head on clash was avoided in Miami Beach because Ulisses is taking off the year to train, grow and ready himself for a 2006 battle.

Little Big Man
When fellow lifter and friend Jim Collins convinced Justin Wilcox to take his lightweight body to Musclemania, it took some convincing.  The Ohio native was a always a loyal NPC man and spent his outing at the Team Universe but he never seemed to get anywhere.  So, when the 5'6" personal trainer walked on the stage Superbody stage, he was surprised that the MM judges and audience really appreciated his natural lightheavyweight, ripped and symmetrical physique.  Not only did Wilcox win his weight class but for the first time in Musclemania history, a lightweight won the overall at a national level event.  Now, having earned MM Pro status, he is training intensely for Musclemania World in Hollywood.  A complete photo gallery and new articles will be posted on Tuesday, July 19.

Viva La Raza
One of the most impressive groups of Musclemania Latin America competed at Superbody.  Ricardo Plata (Columbia), Pompilio Aguilar ('04 MM Central America Champ, Honduras), Jefferson Vasquez (Ecuador), Asuncion Alcocer (Mexico), Angel Rangel ('04 MM Mexico Champ) and Denis Enamorado (Guatemala) [right to left] were just a few of the Hispanics in Miami Beach who represented their countries.  "This kind of contest is really special for us", said.Rangel.  "I have competed for four years and the publicity and promotion that winning Musclemania Mexico has given me is unlike anything else offered in my country."  Rangel and Aguilar competed as MM Pros and as the Musclemania World Tour continues its expansion in Latin America, more Hispanics will be competing at the MM World Championship events.  This year MM Latino, Central America, Mexico and Argentina will be held and next season the Caribbean and Columbia will be added.

Little Big Man Conquers It All
For the first time in the history of Musclemania World Tour, a lightweight won a national and international title. Last weekend in Miami Beach, Justin Wilcox walked on the Superbody stage with his immense physique and flawless symmetry, ripped condition and outstanding posing performance. The 5'6", 165 lbs. personal trainer had competed in other federations but waited to enter Musclemania until he felt ready to take on established lightweights like former MM World LW winner Roderick Ternida. In other action, MM Pro Morris Mendez easily won his division and in his MM Pro debut, New Yorker Tommy Alston took second place after laying off two years. Twenty-one year old muscleman Adam Cohen won his third straight MM Junior Division show. And, Filipino phenom Rey Pancho entered and won his first Masters Division competition.

MM Pros in Miami Beach
Each year, the Superbody Championships has been a great opportunity for new bodybuilders who want to be discovered and launch their careers. But, its also where veteran MM Pros expose themselves on the world stage for magazines, television and internet media. In Miami Beach the world's best professional natural bodybuilders will compete among nearly 200 amateurs. Because it is tough to become a MM Pro, the caliber of this division is unparalleled among natural bodybuilding organizations. Here are some of those impressive Pros who have already confirmed their intention to compete in Miami Beach:

Brian Wiefering - Having appeared on two Muscle & Fitness covers, the executive salesman is a master of promotion, marketing and muscle.
Ricky Syamsuri - The Indonesian wonder took home the gold last year in the Amateur Division and hasn't been seen on-stage since. Expect surprises!

Sean Larson - The newly crowned Atlantic Champion is a powerful force on any stage, but in Miami Beach he will deliver energy unmatched.
Morris Mendez - Symmetrically perfect, this juvenile counselor finished 2nd at MM World last year, his first Professional competition.

Kevin Love - As Miami's hometown boy, he will bring 20 lbs. more muscle, improved symmetry and an athletic physique in development since last year.
Anthony Villacci - One of the world's popular natural bodybuilders, he has changed his whole body this year - size, symmetry and looks to kill!

Tommy Alston Jr. - Another sleeper, he's been hiding in New York since earning his MM Pro status and promises show what hos buddies are calling, "dramatic"!
Wil Usher - Unseen on a Musclemania stage for two years, this lightweight classic and posing phenom says, "Now, the time is right. I'm back for the attack."

Size Matters
Being a heavyweight champion is nothing new for 6'2", 220 lbs., Luke Wren. The Wisconsin fitness center owner was a 4 time Collegiate All-American wrestler and has won major non-tested events throughout the Midwest. However, as a lifetime natural bodybuilder, Luke decided to take his physique to the natural scene at the Musclemania Midwest and went home, again, as a champion. However, the 26 year old father of four was stiffly challenged by another impressive heavyweight in Ed Potts from Minnesota. Also 6'2", 220 lbs., the choice between the two massive heavyweights was tough with just 2 points separation. Photos and results will be posted on Friday.

New Cover Model
On the heels of MM Pro Brian Wiefering appearing on the current cover of Muscle & Fitness, yet another Musclemaniac is vying to be next month's cover model.  German star Christian Engel was photographed earlier in the year by the ace photographers at Weiderdom in Woodland Hills, California.   The 27 year old personal trainer needs your support by voting for him at the M&F website survey.  Then, you can meet Christian personally in Miami Beach when he competes at Musclemania Superbody.

Are You Physically Challenged?
An athlete's physical strength, agility, coordination, speed, endurance, and spontaneous thinking are skills that when combined are rarely challenged. But at The Eliminator all six of these skills will be tested in a demanding and relentless manner.  At the upcoming Universe Weekend in Miami Beach, no matter what an athlete's experience may be, he may never know what the phrase "physically demanding" means until attempting the gauntlet of The Eliminator. It will be one of the most entertaining and electrifying events you've ever experienced.  More information and  Entry forms are available at www.universeweekend.com .

So, Who's Counting?
Just like for all his competition, Anthony Villacci's got the days remaining to MM Superbody embellished on his wrist. "I live with it everyday", says Villacci. "It keeps me reminded that with every contest, comes another day of intense training, eating, dieting and mental reflection. He earned his MM Pro status at the '03 MM World but has since competed twice without cracking the Top 5. Far from his amateur days in which he never lost his class, the Pro level has been much more a challenge for this former Illinois high school football star. At 5'11", 210 lbs., Villacci will be at biggest at Superbody. So, when
matched against MM Pros like Morris Mendez, Sean Larson, Ricky Syamsuri and many others, he claims that the grease pencil markings on his wrist will shout 'V' for victory! We will see on June 25 in Miami Beach.

What's In Your "Vitamins"?
On May 11, 2005, in a case that anti-doping experts say could be the first of its kind, a Santa Ana, California, court jury awarded $578,635 to a competitive swimmer who claimed that a contaminated multivitamin caused him to test positive for steroids and be banned from his sport for two years.

Kicker Vencill, who trains in Aliso Viejo, California, won his lawsuit against Ultimate Nutrition, a supplement maker based in Connecticut, earlier this week.  The civil case has no bearing on Vencill's athletic suspension, which ends later this month, but the swimmer said he felt vindicated nonetheless.  "This whole time, the finger has been
pointed at me — you're guilty, you're a cheater," Vencill said Thursday. "When they read this verdict, it was like a breath of fresh air."

Some experts said the verdict could set a precedent in what is considered a gray area in sports — athletes testing positive because traces of banned substances are turning up in everything from zinc tablets to protein powders.  In 2001, the International Olympic Committee financed a study that tested 634 supplements from around the world. It found that nearly 15% contained steroid precursors — a kind of building block the body converts into steroids — not listed on their labels. These substances, although legal, are banned in many sports.

Among products sold in stores in the United States and on the Internet, the figure was nearly 19%.  The levels detected were low, perhaps too low to enhance performance, but sufficient to trigger a positive result.  Officials say that otherwise benign supplements can be contaminated in several ways.

Supplement manufacturers, who operate largely unregulated, might unknowingly buy tainted ingredients from overseas. Or they might make a range of products, including powders or drinks that feature steroid precursors. If the vats aren't thoroughly cleaned, residue from the previous muscle powder can taint the next batch of vitamins down the line.

"It's obviously a widespread problem and a big concern for athletes," said Michael Bahrke, a researcher who has written about doping in sports. "This case opens the door for a lot of cases to follow."

Vencill tested positive for the prohibited substance 19-norandrosterone after an out-of-competition test on Jan. 21, 2003. He immediately sent his supplements to a private lab, which allegedly found that his multivitamin, a product called Super Complete, tested positive.

Even as Vencill's case worked its way through various anti-doping panels, authorities said they believed his story. But the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency faces a dilemma in such instances because current tests cannot distinguish between a barely tainted vitamin and the tail end of a large, intentional dose taken weeks earlier.   So authorities have taken a "strict liability" stance by which athletes are responsible for everything that goes in their bodies.

Vencill filed suit against Ultimate Nutrition after all his athletic appeals had failed, saying he hoped to clear his name. His attorney, Howard Jacobs of Los Angeles, who has represented numerous athletes in doping cases, said the verdict this week could help other athletes.  "I think it's going to be a big wakeup call to the supplement companies," Jacobs said. "They've gone largely unchecked for however many years. Now they know that if they don't clean up their manufacturing processes, they can be held accountable."

Mad Max Man
One of Canada's hottest musclemen, Kurt Tomlinson, was recently signed to a promotion deal with Allmax Nutrition. The 25 year old college senor was the '03 MM Canada LHW Champ and has been a popular competitor at MM World. Kurt was a Canadian collegiate football star before concussions forced him to leave the gridiron and take up competitive bodybuilding. His growing popularity also has caught the eye of publisher Bob Kennedy who has scheduled a downtown Toronto photo shoot next month for Musclemag and AHF. Kurt is currently training for MM Superbody in Miami Beach.

"Wanna Ride This Wave"
It was a sold-out, packed theater and the stage was dense with tension when Sean Larson was announced the Musclemania Atlantic Champion. The 27 year old blackjack dealer hadn't competed since the '03 MM New England. "I had to skip over the 2004 Atlantic due to a major operation and 9 months fresh off the slab to claim what should have been mine in 2003 in Boston", explained Sean. But he was back with a vengeance to win Musclemania and for the cheering crowd he achieved his goal. Sean rejoiced, "My feet haven't touched the ground! I'm looking down from Cloud 9, right now, and can tell you the view's better up here!" His first outing as a Musclemania Pro will be at Superbody in Miami Beach. "I'm ready, so bring it on. I wanna ride this wave."

FDA Ephedra Ban Struck Down
A federal judge in Salt Lake City on Thursday (April 14) struck down the FDA ban on ephedra, the once-popular weight-loss aid that was yanked from the market after it was linked to dozens of deaths. Judge Tena Campbell ruled in favor of a Utah company that challenged the Food and Drug Administration's ban. Utah-based Nutraceutical claimed in its lawsuit that ephedra "has been safely consumed" for hundreds of years.
Supplements that included ephedra have been widely used for weight loss and bodybuilding, but have linked to 155 deaths, including that of Baltimore Orioles pitching prospect Steve Bechler. The FDA ordered the substance off the market in April 2004.  The judge's ruling sends the matter back to the FDA "for further rulemaking consistent with the court's opinion" and keeps the agency from enforcement action against the companies.

South Beach Sizzling Bodies
It may have been the first show of the season, but South Beach was sizzling last weekend at the Fitness Festival. Crowd favorite Rico Elbaz was shocked with his 3rd place finish behind Musclemania veterans Hector Mateo (1st) and Canadian star Kurt Tomlinson (2nd). But the beauty of the South Beach show is the media attention that the bodybuilders got regardless of their placings. Rico is a professional dancer and Mr. Las Vegas winner and the beach girls in a purr. Hector is a MM Atlantic class winner and Kurt a MM Canada class winner. The MM South Beach is all part of the exciting Miami Beach Sports & Fitness Festival which hosts 20 other competitions and nearly 50,000 fans over the 4-day event. More South Beach info and photos will be posted on Friday. Next on the Musclemania circuit is the Atlantic (April 23, New Haven), Pittsburgh (May 27-28) and Midwest (June 5, Chicago).

Muscle & Fitness Cover Model
For the last 6 months, MM Pro Brian Wiefering has been training for Superbody. It will be his first competition in over 3 years and he's promised to be 20 lbs. bigger. Earlier this month, Brian was flown to California to shoot for the cover of Muscle & Fitness magazine which currently has his image posted on their website for readers to vote. You can support him by selecting Brian's cover here. Brian is a married father of 4 beautiful girls and works as a national sales manager for a genetic identification company in Cincinnati. We look forward to seeing him in Miami Beach in June.

What's To Believe?
Since his big win at the Musclemania World Championships in November, heavyweight David Whittaker has been nagged by a post on the INBA website. The organization's shocking statement claims, "David Whittaker, Silver Medal Winner (at the INBA Natural Olympia), tested positive for steroids and must return winning and medal from the event and is now banned for life from the ABA/INBA/PNBA." Conversely, David's Musclemania urinalysis test, performed two weeks after the Natural Olympia, reported negative results for any steroids. So, what's to believe?
During a recent interview, David asserted, "I have never used steroids. It's not me! Can I help it if I've got good genetics? My whole family's big. My younger brother weighs over 280 lbs.!" So, if David is telling the truth, how could the INBA steroid test results be accurate? Well, we asked David's attorney and received this written statement earlier this week: Please be advised that I have just faxed and mailed a letter to Denny Kakos (President) of the INBA demanding that he remove from his website the defamatory information about David Whittaker. I have also demanded that he immediately forward certified test results and an affidavit regarding the test sample and its chain of custody. In addition, I have demanded that the INBA comply with its own regulations regarding test result management (Article 7 of its rules) and convene an independent review panel and initiate the procedure for B sample testing. I will keep you apprised as to whether Mr. Kakos complies with these demands. Please also be advised that I am in the process of filing a lawsuit on behalf of Mr. Whittaker against Denny Kakos and the INBA for defamation and other causes of action. Should you have any questions regarding the above, please do not hesitate to contact me. Respectfully, J. Niswonger
Attorney at Law
Musclemania International stands behind David and believe him to be a truly natural bodybuilder. As his lawsuit progresses through the court system, MM.com will post public record.

David is currently training 100% natural for his MM Pro debut at Superbody in Miami Beach.

"In Da Gym"
50 Cent, the beefy, beefing MC just released his second album, The Massacre, selling more than 1.1 million copies of the disc and scoring the biggest debut of the year. But is that body morphed or for real? Well, read from 50's diary as posted at Richmond.com in 2003 and then you decide. Yo, Diary, Today I worked out at da gym. My PT was like "We gotta work those pecs, 50. I was like "Yo, man. I took nine bullets. I need to chill, for real." He wasn't hearing it. Finally after a few minutes of straight up fussin', he
agreed to let me do some yoga. My downward dog is tight, yo! After da gym I took a shower, and tried out some new bath salts my homie Dr. Dre recommended. They smelled like roses and sh** and they made my skin feel smooth, yo. 50 recently purchased Mike Tyson's former Conneticut mansion which includes a 1,500 square foot gym.

Flying High
It was just his first competition, but you knew there was something unique about this guy. Although he arrived late for competitor registration, wasn't prepared for the photo session and posed like he gangling wrestler, he had the genetics of an athletic Adonis. At 6'1", 195 lbs., Kevin Love was so impressive that he beat everyone and went home as the 2003 Musclemania Florida Champion. The former high school football and basketball star was always an athletic guy, but muscle mass wasn't something with he was concerned. "I just liked winning!", claims Kevin. "I was always playing some kind of sport and love the rush of throwing further, running faster or
hitting harder." At 28 years, Kevin works as a Federal special agent and is preparing for MM Pro debut at Musclemania Superbody. Since winning the Florida 18 months ago, Kevin has added nearly 20 lbs. of lean muscle and poses like a dancer. "When I step on stage again, nothing will be missing - my body and routine will be hard to beat," he claims. No doubt, Kevin Love will be flying high!

Atlantic
While the South Beach show always starts off the contest season in glorious sunshine and eclectic surroundings, the Atlantic show is at the heart of the Musclemania World Tour. Each year, this Northeast classic is where newcomers see if their biceps are big enough and families and friends probably watching their first bodybuilding show. The Atlantic is where MM Pros Morris Mendez and Ulisses Jr. jump started their careers and who guest pose on the same stage. Behind the success of the show is promoter Cannone (center), a former Musclemania athlete himself who relishes a close relationship with his competitors. "I still remember what it's like standing and stage and hear that crowd cheering", says Cannone. "So, I try to produce the best shows for the people who come to my show. I want them to feel like a superstar!" Over 100 bodybuilders will come to be seen along with the beautiful ladies in the Fitness Atlantic Pageant and Ms. Bikini Atlantic.

Body in Balanced Harmony
Last November, Komang Arnawa arrived in America for the first time with humble intentions to just compete and introduce himself to American bodybuilding community. But, two weeks later, the unassuming 5'6", 185 lbs. bodybuilder returned to his native Bali as the Musclemania Pro World Champion. Switching from karate to bodybuilding in 1995, the 28 year old tour guide has since never lost a competition including the Indonesian and Australian National and Musclemania Championships. But, like his good friend and fellow Balinese bodybuilder Ade Rai, the sport of bodybuilding and all its accolades have a unique perspective for Komang. "My
life as a Balinese is as much spiritual as it is sports orientated," says Komang. "My culture is one where constant diligence towards the case of our deities and ancestors is extremely important. As a Hindu, each morning before leaving the house to train, I visit my family temple because our job here on earth is to ensure a balanced harmony between good and evil." And, this balance has seemingly proven to be in perfect harmony for Komang. To learn more about Komang, visit his new website www.arnawa.com. Also, check out his training regimen, nutrition and unique methods with exclusive MM.com updates.

Mirror, Mirror on the Wall . . .
IIt may be 5 months to Musclemania Superbody, but already MM Pro Anthony Villacci has been grease marking his hand (etched at 145 days in the photo at 216 lbs.). After failing to make the Top 5 at MM World , he has committed himself to not over dieting and keeping his mass for competition. But, from the competition, an interesting observation to his bodybuilding ambition. Says Villacci, "I realize now that being at my best may not reward me with a trophy but, more importantly, it will give me what I have wanted all along . . . recognition!" The former football star started competing by winning the '00 MM Midwest, '01 MM World Novice
Class, '02 MM World LHW Class and '03 MM Superbody LHW Class. "The Pros are a completely different league. The standard is the toughest in the world and I will claim the title someday. Until then, I will win commercially," claims Villacci. He will start by making a weekend long guest appearance at MM South Beach, April 1-3.

No More Excuses
Starting on Friday, January 21, the US Federal government banned the sale, purchase and use of prohormones and "andro" products without a prescription. Anyone caught with the substances, which are supposed to turn into testosterone when ingested, could face prison and fines.
Because of the ban, bodybuilders have been stocking up on the supplements before they become illegal for over-the-counter sales, resulting in a temporary spurt in business for nutrition stores and on-line suppliers. The ban is part of a crackdown on athletic-performance-enhancing supplements in the wake of major scandals involving professional athletes. It follows the government's ban last year on fat-burning and weight-loss products containing ephedrine, a stimulant that boosts heart rate and metabolism, after a number of people taking the supplements suffered heart attacks or other heart problems. In October, President Bush signed a bill declaring andro a "schedule III controlled substance" - the same category in which anabolic steroids were placed by the government 15 years ago because of the known and potential adverse effects. In recent years, the bodybuilding supplements industry has marketed prohormones as mild versions of steroids that boost strength and stamina, while helping the user build more muscle, burn more fat and recover from workouts faster.

Rick Martis, who owns Florida based Physical Addictions, said his sales of prohormones have doubled in recent weeks, with some customers spending up to several thousand dollars on the products, which can cost up to $70 or $80 a bottle. He said his store in Indialantic, Florida sells to walk-in customers, and also takes orders by telephone or the Internet from customers in other states and countries - including members of the military in Iraq. Martis, who have been in the business for 16 years, said there is plenty of politics and not enough science behind the andro ban. "I think people should have a choice as adults on whether to buy it or not to buy it," Martis said. Gus Barni, president of Atlas Operations, a maker of prohormones and other sports-nutrition products in Pompano Beach, Florida, said the government has done a poor job of informing the public and those in the industry about the ban, as well as how it will be enforced. Barni said he thinks the ban will create "a massive black market" for steroids. He said his company is working on an herbal alternative to prohormones, although he said it will be hard to match the strength of the latest prohormone products. Martis said the industry has "pushed the envelop" with the latest products that more closely mimic steroids. However, he said the andro ban stands to enrich pharmaceutical companies, because many bodybuilders, athletes and fitness buffs will go back to buying steroids "on the streets" or seeing doctors to get testosterone-boosting drugs by prescription. "While andro products may seem to have short-term benefits, the science shows that these same properties create real and significant health risks," said Food and Drug Administration Commissioner Mark McClellan. "There is no proven safe substitute for hard work and training when it comes to improving athletic skill. We will do all we can to protect Americans against companies that seek to profit by trying to convince consumers otherwise." Jim Pettis, 29, a self-described "natural" bodybuilder who works at Hawk's Gym in Indialantic, said he started taking prohormones about three years ago to help him prepare for bodybuilding contests, but he stopped taking the products a few months ago because he felt his body adapted to it and the benefits wore off. But he called it "stupid" to make prohormones illegal. "At least, up until now, it's been a safe alternative to the black market," Pettis said. Musclemania International competitors are tested at regional, national and international events utilizing polygraph and/or urinalysis methods depending upon the promoters perogorative. In the past, some competitors who have tested postive used the excuse that "it was the andro" which caused the red flag. Now, there are no more excuses.

Men's Journal Top 100
With thousands of personal trainers in America, to be among the Top 100 by a major national magazine is more than an honor. So when the monthly Men's Journal notified Minneapolis bodybuilder Nyanty Bolo, the 27 year old trainer could barely explain restrain himself. "I have been working hard for over 6 years. This kind of recognition makes it all worth whiled." Bolo, as his friend call him, has competed in the Musclemania World since 2001 and always a Top 5 Finalist. He runs his own personal training studio and he says, "My clients includes attorneys, housewives, doctors, contractors, high school and collegiate jocks - I got it all covered." Bolo started bodybuilding when a customer at a pizza joint he was managing saw his skinny, but muscular, arms and dragged him to the gym for the first time. Since then, he has added 40 pounds of muscle and plans to compete as a heavyweight next year at, once again, Musclemania World. Bolo will soon be introduced as a Musclemaniac.

New Syamsuri Video
Musclemania Superbody Champion Ricky Syamsuri is featured in a new training and profile video just released. Produced by Hong Kong based Muscle Zone Productions, the 1 hour video was shot in Indonesia and Hong Kong and includes intense training workouts and personal lifestyle features. Ricky has trained with fellow MM star Ade Rai for the past 6 years and recently married his younger sister. Currently, Ricky is training for his MM Pro debut at Superbody next June in Miami Beach.

Tron Tanks The Competition
When the Musclemania World audience saw this freak of a competitor take the stage, they weren't sure what to make of the it all. They were dead silent! But it was whom they thought - Tron from ABC's Jimmy Kimmel Live show. The mid-aged, computer geek of late night talk was at the show for a special report to be broadcast sometime this month. Tron pumped-up with and interviewed the other contestants while competing with the Novice Heavyweights, in pun, of course. For many of the international contestants, they thought that Tron was just an out-of-shape bodybuilder in his posing routine costume. But, when the television cameras surrounded him, everyone realized that Tron was no threat to them.

David is Goliath
When mammoth Dave Whitaker weighed-in at 230 lbs. at Musclemania World last weekend, you knew this guy was a contender for the heavyweight and overall title. He would face last year's Musclemania Superbody heavyweight winner Robert Terry who at 6'4", 256 lbs. would also be a dominate force on stage. But, the 6'3" Whitaker was too much for all of the heavyweights with his amazing width, symmetry and sheer overall size. The 33 year old sales account executive from San Diego has competed for many years winning the Natural Olympia and Mr. International. However, as he put it, "I trained hard and felt the time was right to move up to Musclemania." Whitaker is now a Musclemania Pro and will prepare for his debut next season. Complete contest results and photos will be posted on Monday.

Northern Threat
Musclemania Canada Champion Larry Vinnette made his way from Montreal to California for the first time. Coming off of his big Canadian win and then as runner-up at Superbody in June, he was out for the gold at Musclemania World. At 5'8", 190 lbs., Larry brought to the stage a complete package of size, shape and good looks. The personal trainer and fitness model has rapidly risen on the natural scene and was a favorite. However, the Musclemania Pro line-up this year was the most competitive since 1999 when Ade Rai, Stan McQuay, Tito Raymond and Keith Bullock competed. Larry missed the Top 5 loosing to many established MM Pros and Indonesian sensation Komang Arnawa but with added arm development and overall more muscle mass, he may return to Musclemania World as completely new bodybuilder and threat.
