I was raised by
two supportive parents in a small, BC town. Like most kids
growing up in Canada I played many team sports like hockey
and baseball. I also swam competitively until I was 16. Swimming
gave me the foundation to enhance my build as I grew older.
At a young age I wanted a muscular build just like Bruce Lee
and Arnold. It wasn’t until an uncle of mine took me
to a gym in my teens that I took training seriously. When
I began, I knew nothing about training and nutrition and slowly
learned more about it as I kept at it. I soon became a certified
trainer myself and began training others. A fellow trainer
(Ted Kewin chief organizer of Canadian Bodybuilding Federation
– CNBF west at the time) encouraged me to enter his
show. I learned a lot from him about diet, discipline and
posing for a show. I didn’t place that year put I reached
many personal goals and two years later I finally made podium
at his show (2000).
For each show I
would hire a photographer to do a photo shoot. Instead of
entering another show I chose a new goal so I sent my images
to a talent management company. The company was interested
and flew me down to California for my first paid photo shoot
with Cory Sorenson of Muscle and Fitness. I was told I was
going to get a cover of Exercise and Health; instead I got
a 12-page workout layout. I was thrilled. Through networking
with other models I met Eric Jacobson of Impact Photography.
He flew me to Kansas and hired me to do a two-day shoot. I
have been fortunate to have graced many fitness magazines
from this. I reached my second goal of a fitness cover in
2002 (one of Eric’s images). I found fitness modeling
rewarding because you got paid and traveled. However, being
from BC it was part-time because there are fewer opportunities
for fitness modeling here. My full-time position is in health
care as a Rehabilitation Assistant at Royal Inland Hospital,
Kamloops, BC. I also work as a Personal Trainer.
In 2004, I wanted
to compete again. I saw MuslceMania-Vancouver as my next goal.
I wanted to place first this time around. After having a three-year
hiatus from competing I believed I had gained some size and
maturity. I reached another goal from this competition and
placed first in the lightweight division. The show was upbeat,
fun and full of energy. The free posing routine allowed for
creativity and props, which I favored.
I hope
to compete in Toronto at the 2005 MuscleMania show this year.
My word of advice: is to choose your goals and go after it.
