Hi!
I am Komang from Indonesia and
just became the Musclemania Pro World Champion. My frist Musclemania
competition was the '02 Pestaraga in Jakarta where over 400
bodybuilders competed. Even though I qualified as a Musclemania
Professional, I decided to wait and train for two years before
coming to America for the first time. But, bodybuilding is
just a part of my life passions.
Karate (Kushin Ryu) was my basic sport before seriously competing
in Bodybuilding in 1996. Diving is another interest in my
life and as a PADI Dive Master; I have discovered some great
underwater sites around the island of Bali. Colorful fish,
coral and the occasional turtle are great things to keep you
occupied outside of the mental and physical demands of bodybuilding.
I am very fortunate in that my year round dieting is a commitment
that I have come to consider as part of my lifestyle rather
than a sacrifice associated with the sport. The food I consume
off-season is very similar to what many bodybuilders eat throughout
their contest preparation. I am at the stage now where I can
actually feel the effects of the food on my body within minutes
of consuming the food. It is quite amazing how your body responds
when you commit yourself to ‘clean living’ over
many years. Once a week I spoil myself with ice-cream or pancakes.
I personally enjoy and love my lifestyle as a healthy person.
As everyone knows, by decreasing calorie intake, it gives
a longer life and we can enjoy the majority of our life by
doing something positive which will be a benefit to other
people, other than ourselves.
This year I plan to conduct seminars around the island of
Bali and introduce body building as part of a healthy lifestyle
rather than place emphasis only on the competitive aspect
of the sport. I hope to encourage people to accept bodybuilding
as a means of achieving their best and, as a role model, try
to illustrate the benefits of living life as a healthy person.
I will also continue my work as a private fitness consultant
to begin saving towards my next competition.
My life as a Balinese is as much spiritually orientated as
it is sports orientated. My culture is one where constant
diligence towards the care of our deities and ancestors is
extremely important and part of our every day life. Our religion
is Hindu and we believe that it is our job here on earth to
ensure there is a balanced harmony between good and evil.
Each morning, before leaving the house, I visit my family
temple and again at night before retiring for the evening.
Our agenda is organized according to the ‘Puwukon’,
a written description depicting what activities the day is
suitable for over a 210-day cycle. This special information
is written based on astrology. We still live according to
a normal 365-day calendar however the Puwukon information
is valued more highly as it determines when our ceremonies
take place and when is the most appropriate time to perform
our yearly activities such as planting crops, starting a business,
meeting people etc. The most traditional members of our religion
will rarely perform an important activity without first consulting
the Balinese Puwukon. Therefore, each year I celebrate two
birthdays – one on the 13th of December and another
on the day I was born according to the 210- day cycle.
I have set many goals for myself this year that I hope to
achieve. I hope my achievements over the years have helped
to inspire other Balinese to never lose sight of their goals
no matter what the odds are against them. I believe I am a
good example of what constant belief in yourself and your
faith can achieve and hope that I will be one of many Indonesia’s
to perform well on a world stage and secure my country’s
name as one of the great sporting nations in bodybuilding.
Four wins in four successive competitions is not a bad start!
Thanks,
Komang
